Please correct Elizabeth Seaton's page: It currently states; "AS A CATHOLIC FOR SATAN. " That's quite a HUGH mistake.

Looking at the people actually named, this isn't really 10 “famous atheists and agnostics who became Catholic.” Graham Greene is an especially odd inclusion because he was already Catholic and remained Catholic. Takashi Nagai also doesn't fit neatly into the atheist category, and several others were only briefly atheist or agnostic before becoming famous for their Catholic work. So the title makes the list sound much more impressive than it actually is.<br><br>But I do notice a major problem with the way these stories are presented. A lot of the turning points described here are psychological or personal experiences: motherhood, grief, suffering, guilt, the search for meaning, dissatisfaction with materialism, or a powerful religious experience. Those things can explain why someone became receptive to Catholicism, but they aren't themselves evidence that Catholicism is true. A person feeling that materialism “doesn't explain enough” doesn't establish God, and an intense religious experience doesn't establish the interpretation someone gives it, especially when people in mutually contradictory religions report similar experiences.<br><br>But now I’m curious. If conversion stories are supposed to demonstrate that atheism doesn’t withstand serious intellectual scrutiny, shall we do the other half of the experiment?<br><br>Let’s look at José Saramago and George Santayana, both raised Catholic and both eventually rejecting traditional religious belief, and look at why they left. Not “got angry at the Church” stories, but the intellectual, philosophical, historical, and evidential reasons they gave for abandoning religious belief.<br><br>Then we can compare the arguments rather than counting conversion stories. Because “10 people changed their minds” cuts both ways. Humans are remarkably talented at changing their minds in opposite directions.
