I wish the Army had gone with 6.8 SPC, or 6.5 Grendel, or .277 Wolverine for the fighting rifle, and kept 7.62x51mm NATO for the medium machine gun, .300 Win Mag for long distance, and .50 BMG for heavy machine guns. Most of what we have already works extremely well. <br><br>I do want to upsize from 5.56mm though. After deploying to Iraq and Africa with it, I am underwhelmed. Sure, it is easy to shoot and carry, however if I have to shoot 3+ rounds to be sure a threat will go down quickly, it negates the extra rounds. <br><br>I wouldn't be surprised if .277 Fury improves with further development, and also wouldn't be surprised if we end up with a lower pressure (60K) general purpose round, then the high pressure (80K) hybrid being used for Designated Marksmen. You would still get excellent performance out of that 6.8mm round operating at 60K, without beating up the rifles so bad.
