How was your 20 minutes? Or do you have another method that works for you?

I think my bored/pain comes from aggravating aspects of setting up to create music. Cabling, tuning, getting any chart or music together, setting levels, re-doing and re-checking and re-tuning, etc, is all so annoying to me I get a big dopamine hit once the music begins.

The journey is memories you can look back on with honor. The pain makes the completion more satisfying.

Here I go into my 20…

I have been working on taking a tiny musical idea and trying to implement it everyday on different tunes. The process feels rewarding, the feeling that you are headed somewhere. I dig it.

I used to leave my creative space a mess, layers of projects covered every surface. My studio time was part archeological discovery, I would weigh the excitement of pursuing a project I'd uncovered with the pain of the cleaning required to do so and then develope a complicated tidying schedule that left the messy layers and still provided space to make. It was very rewarding and exhausting.

Lately I've been learning to catalog my ideas, so the mess is in a book instead of on every horizontal surface. The administrative work is a pain in the, but I'm getting more projects finished.

I have been avoiding the pain of completing a certain project by starting (and finishing) many new small projects without the layered mess. Finishing them has not been rewarding. That certain project stares at me from its canvas, some days it's nagging and some days it's enticing. This week I'm going to begin the process of finishing it.

I'm also in the process of developing a studio practice out of that archeological tragedy I used to enjoy. I haven't yet found the joy in this new to me process though, the empty surfaces call for action but the limitation of one project at a time is boring.

I think there are plenty of ways that making can be addictive, though I would say they are all probably attached to a wounded past and only serve to keep the pain alive.
