I pedaled around on a 1986 Redline Proline 800p running around a 19.75" T.T. I had a xxxl goose neck and a crazy tall handlebar. Back then I was totally clueless about sizing a bike for anyone! Then I got a Redline 720xl with Tange blade forks, and the first set of 401 flight cranks in Idaho Falls. I thought this was a major step in the right direction! I still needed a set of 8" tall bars, and the longest gooseneck I could find. And I made it work! My son has this Redline now, but I still was wanting to find a little bit bigger Frame!! So I bought my first 24" cruiser. I bought a 97 Haro group one si with a 22" T.T. and added an 8" tall set of bars and the same xxxl threadless stem I could find. This was a lot of fun! But it still felt a little on the smaller side, but was a monster by weight of compassion to the 800p. Then I found a Mosh 3 star method, and did all the same things. Then one day I decided to Google xxx lbmx frames, and one thing lead to another. And poof the se racing fast ripper was invented, so I decided to take a little closer look. After seeing the top tube at 23.6" I was like o.m.g. this is the ONE!!! After waiting around 3 months for it to show up. I decided to swing by a different bike shop, and sitting outside was the GT PRO PERFORMER in neon orange 🍊 the owner asked if I wanted to take it for a spin? I said nope, because I will want to buy it... So after the fourth month of waiting for the fast ripper, I pedaled back to the bike shop. This time I was thinking about a test ride! And poof my new gt... The main reason for the big gt, is that it has a laid-back seat post and taller bars! Holy Hannah this was awesome!! Then after looking online at the  geometry, and seeing that 23.5" top tube. I was like sold, just take my money please!!! I am 6'5" tall with a 36" inseam. My knuckles drag on the floor! I finally have a few bikes that feel like they actually fit me. I don't need a long stem, but do still like riding a taller set of bars! Awesome video man!!! 😎

When I raced in the 80s everyone was riding pro frames. I looked at a sizing chart and purchased a Hutch Expert Racer. That bike fit me perfectly and I started just killing it at the track.  When my friends around my height rode my bike they were all shocked at how much easier it was to ride than their pro frames.  If someone says it's not important they are flat wrong.

Pedal thickness is something I noticed not many people take into account. I’m not sure about clipless , but there are a ton of flat pedals out there that vary in thickness quite a bit.

Adding a longer stem to make up for a short frame isn't always good. Putting your bars farther out over your wheel changes steering

From my late teens through my mid 20's my 6' plus arse rode Pro XL and XXL frames paired with the RL 180 mm Flights, the tallest bars, way laid back seat posts and longest stems available. I had one 20" frame custom built by Cycle Craft (Shag Shaughnessy era) to fit my 6' 5" size. That bad boy was like a stretched limo. My bikes were set up for flatland, street and dirt jumping.

I think they should change the rules. I mean, they should allow the riders to use a size frame of their preference. Same if they want to use "speeds" like "MTB" bikes use. So, you could see races between 20 and 24 or even 26 if they want to.

This is exactly why CW made the ZM model. The top tube was 16.5” for the riders stuck between a mini and expert frame. Helped me get off the gate faster and out of the turns. My bike was dialed in for me as I wasn’t as big as the other kids in my age division.

I'm 173 and I'm still running my upgraded expert xl redline john purse signature, and it feels great but I always hesitate upgrading to a pro size. I just have a huge emotional bond with that redline, my parents couldn't effort much but still got me that great bike for xmas at the time

Never really ever got help dialing in my bike It just kind of bought parts thought they were going to work.

Good video that helps me to understand sizing a little better.  The one issue I have with BMX sizing is that most of the charts give a certain range of rider height for each bike size.  If like me at 5'9", one is at the top of the range of one size, say Pro XL, and at the bottom of the next size (Pro XXL) which way do they go?  I understand that is where changing stem length, bar height, etc., come into play, but there are going to be differences in the ride and feel between them that the new rider even trying out a few bikes is not going to recognize or understand.  Ideally, also, it makes sense to get a bike that is as close to what works for you from the start so as to minimize need (and cost) to change parts.   Isn't it better to just start out on a reasonably priced bike, chosen using the generalized charts, to figure more of your needs after riding it for a period.
