One of my favorite sayings on raiding cultures is "The difference between a Raider and a Trader is how well defended you are."

not even just failure to prepare, actively sabotaging prior preparations.

The average farmer might have been okay in the bronze age collapse, if we're thinking of it as mostly a palace center elite collapse.
Unless the farm got in the path of the Sea People's raids. Or ruined in the drought. Or the very likely conflicts between bandit groups that had once been parts of the official armies.

If the Sea Peoples themselves were nations on the move, that sounds like a lot of desperate people uprooted and looking for a place, not just the palace elites.

And a similar collapse today would be far worse: Far fewer of us are farmers and even the farmers are dependent on world trade networks for fuel and fertilizers. A serious collapse would be starvation on a mass scale. It wouldn't just be "life goes on, but without phones".

Great discussion. Pete, through your hard work and effort you have earned the credibility to engage with top notch academics and scholars, discussing the past, present and future with an informed and curious mind. . This is what “civilization” looks like. Well done.

We're definitely headed for some type of a collapse whether total, or partial, is the better question.

Sadly I doubt many world leaders are reading Eric's books or even having their scribe's read them to them. It would be a better world if they did.

An interesting concept is that, without the collapse of the tin trade from Britain/Spain east of Gibraltar/landlocked Asian sources the Iron Age would likely have been significantly later.

During the Late Bronze Age, there were people working iron, but the iron tools/weapons were still inferior to the bronze ones. Iron work improved fairly rapidly following the collapse of the tin trade from necessity.
