  My son's stationed aboard the USS George Washington, his second carrier after the USS Ronald Reagan. He's an ABH 3rd class currently. He said he was only to enlist for a 4-year term but he likes being on a carrier so much that he decided to reenlist for another 4 years. I'm proud of the man he has become.

  I was not an air "rat", We called them Airdales and we were called Snipes. But I was on an aircraft carrier USS Kitty Hawk CV-63 1979-1983 (2mmr) 2 main machinery room. I was a (BT) Boiler technician. You ask the question could you work at 90 degrees. Answer is yes it was always 116 degrees down in the main space daily. 1200 psi steam at 1010 degrees pipes get hot. We worked anywhere from 12 on 12 off, 6 on 6 off, and the dreaded 4 on 8 off way to much time off. A Buddy and I volunteered to fix our economizer on one of the boiler's, from start to finish it took 43 hours at 116 degrees, yes there was a blower on the checkmans watch station, we would occasionally cool down a little under the blower. But in the Indian Ocean when its 95 percent humidity and a hundred degrees outside that blower is blowing 100-degree air. Great times. Back in my early 20s.

  My father did 30 in the "Canoe Club' as an Aviation Machinist Mate. Went in as a boot recruit in the late 30's and came out in the early 50's in the very first wave of Warrant Officers. Served on 7 different carriers in the Pacific from '40 to '51. He would feel right at home in that hanger deck! Retired out in '54, his last job was Flight Engineer on the Hawaii Mars.

  I spent many hours on a flight deck in the battle dressing station as a corpsman, I never took a step on the flight deck during flight operations unless someone got hurt. Had nothing but respect for those flight deck guys. USS MIDWAY CVA41 73-75

  USS Forrestal CVA 59, served during the Vietnam war and I would do it all over again. Youngest brother in the Army-Vietnam, Oldest.....Navy....2nd oldest ...Air Force.....third oldest Army-Airborne.....and myself. My mom raised 5 boys by herself. Her job was way harder than ours. God Bless everyone and thanks to all that served this great nation.

  Three years on the flight deck as a squadron trouble shooter and a hydraulic tech.  I wouldn't change a thing. There is nothing like the flight deck. The best high in the world.

  It's been close to 100 years of learning and experience to conduct carrier operations...I'm in awe of the skill set.  Just because you have a carrier or two (China) does not mean you can run them..particularly under duress..GO NAVY !

  USS Enterprise CVN65 two tours. She was drydocked and eventually dismantled :(  The '18s were just being phased into the fleet and we had a deck full of A6s, A7s, F14s, and even S3s!  It was a great time to be alive!  I was an AX2 and I worked in AIMD.  (BTW - The AX rate no longer exists, AX, AQ, and AT were combined into one rate - AT).  I worked nightshift so my dinners consisted of pancakes and bacon, and my breakfast was sliders :).  The best thing about a carrier is that the galley is open.  I don't know about smaller ships.  I worked 12 on and 12 off which could include watches if I get screwed and pull fire watch during my sleeping hours.  It happens and it's part of the job.  You eventually learn to sleep and wakeup on a dime.
