Took a recent deployment here, the airfield in Momote is so overgrown that you couldnt even tell that you were standing on it. As for Los Negros the local government is working with China to improve it and make it an international Airport. Lots of culture here, so much wreckage still laying around from WW2. Need more people to record the history before its forgotten like Rara Island is called that because of the American forces making it into their R&R (rest and relaxation) location.

my father arrived just in time to participate in the landings on Los Negros and Manos Islands as a coxswain on a landing craft. He was USN and spent most of the war in the Admiralty Islands.

It's interesting to see these islands on Google Earth. Los Negros still has the airstrip, called Momote airport; but by all appearances Los Negros seems to be otherwise very sparsely populated and the so-called "airport" looks to be abandoned...or hardly maintained. The big island, Manus, appears to have some population and agriculture going on, but I couldn't find any trace of the airstrip mentioned in this video.

If you really want to see what abandoned looks like then google earth Midway and Wake islands. Midway is actually two tiny islands and reportedly off limits to tourists but neither of those places are very inviting. Midway and Wake were way stations back in the 1930's, the glory days of the Pacific Clipper flying boats. There were luxury hotels and other tourist attractions like fishing and snorkeling. You can still barely see traces of the landing dock on Wake island and where the hotel was. The war ended all that of course, but neither place ever went back to tourism.
