Photograph was their encore song in 88, so they had already been performing for 90+ minutes by the time they performed this. What a show!

It's not only amazing that Rick Allen didn't give up after losing his arm but powered through and found an entirely new way to play, but also that the rest of the band waited for him to do that and refused to replace him. Def Leppard, love them or hate them, is a true band of loyal friends.

Given how heavily produced their albums were I remember being shocked the first time seeing/hearing them live and how close they sounded to the records. They were a band tailor-made for stadiums and their albums reflected that.

Rick was in his hospital bed, recovering from the accident, listening to songs and tapping the end of the bed with his feet. It dawned on Rick that he barely used his left foot when drumming, so he practiced, tapping along to the music, where his left foot took the drum parts where he would have used his left hand, he was figuring out how to drum, before he even tried walking. Once he had figured out the technique of drumming with his left foot, then it was time to find the technology to make it happen, it was still early days for electronic drums, but with the collaboration of the engineers at the drum company and Rick, they got a system working, his left foot replaced his left hand.

Fun Fact: Joe Elliott actually auditioned to be the guitar player for Def Leppard, but they liked his singing voice so much they hired him as the singer!

I saw Def Leppard on the first tour after Rick's accident. They played the Monsters Of Rock show in Stockholm, Sweden, August 23rd, 1986. This was the third show after his recovery and learning the new way of drumming. The two first was August 8th in Ireland and August 16th in England. They had a replacement (stand-in) drummer ready to take over during the shows, but Rick played the entire show in Stockholm and even performed a drum solo that day - Magical.

Rick mentioned bare footing on drum pedals insures no slippage when he drums and he can feel the vibrations from the drums better, which he used to get through drum sticks. Rick is amazing to come back from his accident. He created a new drum kit and a way of thinking in order to perform. Because of his new drum kit, he opened the door for other individuals who are in similar physical circumstances can now learn how to play drums too. For the rest of the band to support Rick and be patient is unheard of and they get my sincerest respect for their conduct. I saw Def Leppard a couple of months after when Rick was came back and was performing again before live audiences. They were awesome! And Rick was spectacular. They played everything! Been following them from their first album to date. I knew when I heard their first song that they were going to be very big!! This video is when I saw them back in 88-89.
