  I see a lot of comments saying a 12 gauge slug would be a one shot kill in the right place....99% of the time, no. &nbsp;Unless you get an eye shot or a straight on nose shot, you&apos;re not dropping a bear with one shot. &nbsp;There have been hunters shoot Kodiak bears with 416 Rigby, 4 or 5 times and the bear keeps coming and mauls them. &nbsp;In one instance I can remember, the Brown Bear took 4, 416 Rigby rounds and one was a direct heart shot. &nbsp;The bear continued to maul them for another few minutes after the heart stopped. &nbsp;Their rage and adrenaline is something else. &nbsp;The only one shot kill is a brain shot. &nbsp;In almost all cases, a Grizzly or Brown bear will charge out of the brush and be on you before you can draw your weapon. &nbsp;It&apos;s no joke.

  Alaska Air taxi pilot here. I&apos;m glad to hear the one guy was carrying a shotgun. Ive had to shoot a few browns over the years. I carry a 12 gag auto shotgun loaded with rifled slugs, but I have the burning magnesium tip shells. 3/4 hit will drop any brown. I continue to fire till its dead

  In a former residence, My next door neighbor was married to an Alaska big game guide. When guiding he would carry a 12 ga shotgun stagger loaded with slug, shot, slug, shot, etc. He said fire off the slug, if still moving direct the shot to the face to bling the bear, repeat until bear is dead.

  I have a better idea, get a can-am to carry everything, it&apos;s faster than a bear, and it provides cover.

  12 gauge slug is more than enough if it hits the right spot. &nbsp;The round hit the shoulder and stopped the bear from killing the men. &nbsp;That&apos;s a success. &nbsp;Most encounters dont end that well. &nbsp;A follow up round or two into the upper chest area or below the jaw would likely have ended the bear.

  I dropped a brown bear with a 12 gage double barrel with slugs in my youth on Admiralty Island 12 gage is no joke
