  &apos;Trane recorded this LP to prove a point...well more than one point!.......to his critics. Many thought he couldn&apos;t play a ballad this proved otherwise , it &nbsp;also showed his respect of the &nbsp;jazz tenor tradition grounded in Hawkins, Prez, Webster, Wardell Grey, Don Byas etc. and ....he does improvise on this set but no extended solos.

  A great and very unique Coltrane album. &nbsp;Coltrane plays the melodies only, no improvising. &nbsp;I saw an interview with Larry Carlton talking about this. &nbsp; Larry says that he was told from reliable sources that this was because &quot;Coltrane didn&apos;t like his reed that day&quot;!
