20 Things British Schools Threw Away.. That We Want Back!

Twenty things British schools had, and got rid of, and every one of them something we would take back tomorrow morning. The nature table under the window. Four hundred of us on a polished hall floor at twenty past nine. The register read out loud. A third of a pint in a crate by the boiler room door. The jobs they trusted us with, the milk monitor and the ink monitor and the child sent across the playground with a note. Blue-black ink and a wooden pen. Tables chanted until they stuck. Log tables and the slide rule. The Banda machine and the smell of the sheets. Peter and Jane. Woodwork, metalwork, domestic science and technical drawing. The garden behind the kitchens. The wireless wheeled into the hall. Cycling proficiency on the playground. The tuck shop at break. The coach trip that took all day. The field they sold. And the kitchen that was still in the building, with a cook who knew your name. Every Act, date and brand named in this film comes from the record rather than from memory. Where the two disagree, the record is stated and the difference is said out loud.
