  im pretty sure their names are ridiculous to further seperate any possible erotic reading of the book. there is nothing sexy about a girl named waldo sleeping with a man named korgy.

  I appreciate McCurdy for creating an imperfect victim in Waldo. I also appreciate how she showed Waldo as part of an environment with extreme and inappropriate ideas about sex (her mom, her best friend). Teenage girls exposed to these extremes cannot and should not be expected to know what normal looks like. Purity culture is a beast. McCurdy captures how difficult it is to find a middle path in her sexuality when Waldo is surrounded by extremes. She works at epstein-wexner-victoria's secret while underage for god's sake. Waldo is simultaneously invincible and falling to pieces, which is exactly what it feels like to be that kind of young girl.

  The description of Waldo using all of the endless toiletries reminded me of the montage from Euphoria where Cassie completes an almost manic and obsessive daily routine. It’s not just about consumption, but also the absurdity of such a complicated and arduous process just to be seen as “acceptable” by the opposite sex. When Waldo starts to become more obsessed with her teacher, she also falls deeper into other obsessive behaviors like modern “self care”.

  I listened to the audiobook, I thought it was good. people who say the sex scenes are cringey and bad .... well yeah, it's sex between a teenager and a grown man, both of whom are trying to perform a role and live up to the false "sexy romance" of how they see each other...that is of course going to be gross cringey sex, and it's written well.

  <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=axt_Vblss6s&amp;t=3252">54:12</a> related to how Korgy is portrayed as pathetic- one thing i really liked about the book was how much the prose seemed like it was trying to evoke a visceral sense of disgust in the reader. It constrasts so sharply with the most famous novel dealing with pedophilic themes, Lolita. I think Lolita is excellently written too, but the fact that it&apos;s written from the predator&apos;s perspective and has such lyrical, eloquent prose causes some people to draw exactly the wrong conclusion: that this is a love story, instead of a story of abuse. I really appreciated the use of disgust in Half His Age, because I think it really pushes back against any readers who might get the wrong impression. It&apos;s harder to romanticize a story where you&apos;re constantly being hit over the head with bodily fluids and shein clothes that smell like formaldehyde and rubbery tv dinners. There&apos;s definitely things that could be improved in the writing quality, but i think overall the bluntness and unpleasant sensory details are really apt for this kind of story
