Nothing will change as long as people keep buying. At the end of the day none of us 'need' any of these things, curb the hording behavior and if retailers or distributors play games to create artificial demand just stop giving them money.

I’ve been popping in and out of Heavymentals streams for a month or two now and I genuinely think he just got high on his own supply. Dude’s been doing nothing but auctioning off RAW Quintana comic covers for $500+ on the regular. I’m all for people getting paid and getting their bag, but his streams were starting to get used car salesmen vibes. Like I can only roll my eyes so many times hearing him talk about Quintana being a once in a lifetime gem of an artist who’s signature deserves to go for $1k because it’s in a “metal chrome guys this is a rare color wow this isn’t just a comic it’s an art piece”. Like you want to be a dealer for high art? Cool go do it, right now you’re selling comic books get a grip this isn’t original art. Heavymental and Quintana definitely pushed their luck, I genuinely believe the 200 out of 2000 they sold at retail were preemptive damage control the way they paraded those 200 copies around as being “for the fans” and if they could have had it their way all 2000 would have been signed and auctioned lol. And I mean, had they done that and been transparent, fine by me but I think they knew that would look bad and people would have turned on them even faster.

This is absolutely worth the conversation that is happening right now. Yes, the auction prices were insane. However, the real issue with what happened is the false marketing and how they set expectations for 1,500 people. For about a week and a half both Heavy Mental and Dan Quintana have been talking about this release. Heavy Mental mentioned over and over again that they were "Dropping" the book on Saturday April 11th. We knew that there were 1,000 copies of two versions: a virgin cardstock and a foil trade. The other thing we knew was that they would also be released on their websites. We were never told a time they were releasing on the website. So given this limited information, everyone shows up to the stream at start time and all are frantically refreshing the website wondering when it will hit and what price it will be and if they will be able to get one. Thats when the chaos came about because there were THREE separate drops on the website at different times and no one was aware of what was happening. Three different instances where people found out that the home page they were refreshing had it already listed and then sold out in less than a second without notice. No one knew how many dropped on the website other than the fact that the first drop showed $25 and then the price raised to $75. Now, immediately after this chaos and three aggravating instances , the stream starts. Everyone is already upset because of the confusion, forget not being able to get any, people are upset because they felt like they weren't given a chance. At this point there are 1,500 people in the stream all expecting a traditional release drop. We knew there were 1,000 copies of both issues and knew it would be an instant sell out, but the assumption at this point is that you will have a fair chance at at least half the print run being available at 1 per person. Now, this is where the straw breaks the camels back. About a few minutes into the stream, of course everyone is asking when they are 'dropping', Heavy Mental says "ok, you all want a drop, lets do a drop" and then makes 25 copies available. Now, when you are a customer waiting every day to try and get this copy and then you see 25 copies get dropped for 1,500 people, your going to feel a certain way. But it doesn't stop there. He proceeds to do, if i recall correctly, two (maybe three) more drops. But the next drops are done also 50 copies or less AND un-announced. So not only did he drop a small portion for a massive audience, but he did it without people knowing when they were releasing and just making them live as everyone is waiting to hear how this is going to work. That is what really got everyone angry. Everything that happens after with the price going to thousands of dollars was just icing on the cake. So, this is not an issue about people not being able to afford the book. This is an issue about transparency and trust. Heavy Mental lost trust in nearly the entire comic community this weekend.

They're trying to pull a fake public apology and damage control. Permanently ban them.

Not only were we chiming in in the chat the mod shibachan was actively booting people - long term customers from the show so they didn’t have a chance to buy at all. I also don’t like how Quintana responded. That shit wreaks
