China ? Hahahaha 😂

Bigger question why? High maintenance - low payback. Waste of resources

Germany used prefabricated tunnel segments in the 1970s building a tunnel in the river Elbe at the city of Hamburg. The Elbe is like the River Thames going through London, a tidal water mixing river water with seawater. So no new China invention, just another copy!

What amazing is the speed and the vastness of the Chinese transformation, not the engineering which builds on hundreds of years of experience and that know-how was basically imported. But the Chinese learnt quickly. But the problem lies in what I started this comment with, speed and vastness. In Europe the Kölner Dome was built under several centuries. China wanted a very swift makeover - and that was expensive for a still basically poor country. The money came from the export of cheap goods to the Western countries which had moved much industry to China to use their cheap workforce. The vastness of these construction sites on land or under water forced very tight budgets and a very demanding timeline.
And to little of that necessary building component, river sand.
In hindsight you can say that the cheating was inevitable. And another component, the lack of transparency and the extreme vertical power structure with a very wide but also very this bottom and then a rapidly narrowing of power inte a thin power structure almost ”reaching for the moon” with resistances to unwelcome information berween all power levels on its way upwards - and demands from the top to keeptnthevspeed and the volume.
It is down to human psychology and the psychological dynamics in an authoritarian society. No sound person is eager to reach the top levels. It becomes reserved for people with a narcissistic personality structure. Who will develop an increasing paranoia from his personal often brutal ascendancy to the top. The person at the top wants to see the monuments of his greatness during his lifetime. The successor will claim the glory if the buildings are not yet finished when he grasps the top position.
And who pays in reality for this volume of construction? The workers through their low wages. A phenomenon that eventually undermine the structure of power - which we see already. It is funny, a ”communist” society mimics a capitalist society in craving unlimited growth - which leads to overestablishments instead of inventions due to the fear of falling behind, you must catch the wave. And now with ninety out of a hundred EV manufacturers gone bust as the construction and solar panels sectors have also done the population with its low salaries cannot increase its consumption så society falls into a deflation spiral which strenghtens the forces to a decreasing fertility rate.
It is hard to grasp. But the forces are yet easy to see in hindsight. Again, it is down to psychology. Economic theories must be reconsidered.
To a large degree economics is based on a guess of rational agents and consumers. But the irrational factors have always been there but discarded.
Today both political theory and economic theory must be based on not only the theory of the rational agents and consumers but not least on the inclusion of vanity and narcissism as equally strong or even stronger forces. And fear. And anger, vengeance and paranoia.

This is a global problem; especially for coastal city infrastructure like the florida apartment building foundation collapse, and also for northern bridges and parkades collapsing because of road salt meeting rebar. Salt destroys concrete over time, except for concrete made of volcanic ash. I've heard that this concrete gets stronger when it meets salt water.

Yes I am fully aware a under water project of that scale can't be fixed like a rusty car body only full specification compliancy can avoid it hope the German engineers building the 18 km Daenmark German underwater tunnel for Scandinavian connection will have learned from this specification non compliancy Fraud failure at there visit to use there more expensive but clean sharp river sand .Believe it or not I was always wondering where Chinas construction contractor get this unbelievable masses of material supply for there concrete required from and also to comply with the specified construction time. This are most certainly not engineering failures but compressed time makes it happen .
