Removing the SMOG pump entirely didn't work in many states because you failed your annual inspection when they noticed the pump was removed! Instead, we disassembled the pump and removed the spring loaded sliding vanes, then reassembled the pump rotor and housing. Without the vanes, the SMOG pump no longer will pump air, but looks completely normal. Remember not to clean up the exterior of the pump while your working on it because if it looks cleaner than the rest of the engine, it could look suspicious!

Also corvair turbo muffler help due to lower back pressure back in the day
Cross over pipes
Or install headers add pipe to mufflers same size a header dump, spray paint black line from connection to open end, fire up engine run at cam break-in speed till paint burns off, cut muffler tube at or 1 or 2inches into burn off line. Combine with cross over pipe and low back pressure mufflers.....

Thank you!…. GREAT video, with insight into incredible “shade-tree” ingenuity from people whose genius was hard to see under the grizzled, down n’ dirty exteriors of ‘70’s racers. Excellent job.

Open headers never made the engine faster. What they found out through testing and this is by the end of the 60s, was that you put about a 36-in pipe after the collector. And you paint it. Wherever the burn mark is stops on the pipe you go about 9 to 12 in further and you cut the pipe off and that is your best tune of that exhaust system. If you put an H pipe between them it would actually run a little bit better. That was worth about 5 to 8 horsepower. But running straight open headers could lose you 12 or 15 horsepower in about 20 ft lb of torque.

Cooling liquid fuel doesn't change its density enough to make a difference. The reason they cool the fuel is because the cold fuel cools the air, and cooling a gas such as air changes the density a lot. Higher density air has more oxygen.
The fuel air ratio, by volume, is about 9000 to 1, so denser fuel makes almost no difference at all because the cylinder is filled with mostly air. Of course this gets complicated because much of the fuel is changing to a gas by the time it's going into the cylinder....but even by mass the ratio is about 13 to 1...so even by that metric it's still mostly air
