In the 1950s, my cookery teacher (a Nun) had notices pinned round the kitchen:”Don’t put it DOWN, put it AWAY!”. I am 80 next year and still embrace this habit.😊

1 tip. As soon as your kid can walk and grab things have them put stuff back where it goes. Clap and cheer them on with stuff like “put your books/teddy in its bed” etc..

My two year old can clean their room fairly well now before bedtime. If they are fussy or overwhelmed just point to one thing at a time and break the steps down to their smallest application.
It’s a lot of early on work but then you have a 3 yr old who picks up after themselves and has more life skills to carry on for the future.

Hi! Early, have watched your channel for many years, just wanted to say I love the direction your channel has gone in! I'm so tired of consumerism & the clutter cycle is a real problem for so many. I grew up in a true hoarder home. Unlearning plus learning new ways of living over the years (plus a recent unemployment phase) has been soo eye opening. wishing the best for you & your fam! ❤

I'm in my 60s, but I was such a neat freak when my girls were little. I picked up and arranged all my kids' toys, every single night. I would clean up and put the little and big pieces in their correct places so my kids could play without having to dig through toys the next day. My girls had a whole upstairs play room the whole length of the house🤪. There were so many areas and categories. They had an art area with an easel, markers, chalk board and supplies for different crafts. A music area with a little piano, cymbals, a microphone and little play guitar. My girls also had a library with a lot of kids' books, and I even made them pretend library cards. Part of the room was set up like a school so they could play pretend school with each other and their dolls.
The doll area had strollers, play baby beds and a swing. It would take me awhile to get it all organized because you know kids don't leave things in their correct areas or spots. Of course it wouldn't be fun playing if everything had to stay in it's spot. The kitchen area had a table where I would set up place settings every single night. I put the kid's pots and pans on the play stove or in their kitchen cabinets. Of course, the play food had correct spots in their little refrigerator. The sink even had a little pretend wash cloth to wash those dishes in the kitchen sink. I bought a children's cash register so they could ring up the box food and I had a grocery store set up. I get tired just thinking about it all now!! I was a stay at home mom during this time, but boy, was I nuts doing all of that every night😂
Trust me, it didn't make one difference in their lives as they grew up. My suggestion would be to spend quality time playing with your kids and do activities instead of owning a bunch of stuff. Play outside with your kids. I did that too but when they talk about their childhood the things they mention are about playing on the big hill outside and pretending they were cowboys and Indians and pretend cooking with rocks, leaves and using sticks. They remember jumping in the leaves from their dad and I raking them up. The birthday they loved the most was the one where we got big boxes free from a furniture and a large appliance store. We cut them, taped and painted the boxes to look like castles. It was easy to dispose of after months of play. Basically, they talked about the simple things that cost little to no money and took up little to no storage space. All those toys are not necessary.

One hack that works pretty well for me is to always leave a room with something in your hand. Like: You see the empty mug in the living room when leaving, pick it up and bring it back to the kitchen. These are typically small items, but you're on your way out anyway, so it helps a lot throughout the day.

Multiple 5 minute resets throughout the day sounds more manageable than a big reset at the end of the night. Thanks!

I hear you saying “You’re never going to feel like it” in my head every day. The other one from you that I rely on is “a body in motion stays in motion, and a body at rest stays at rest.” That often helps me to keep up my momentum, or to help me get off the couch and into action.

I take pictures of things and then at the end of the month go through the pictures and decide if I really want to spend the money in my next mo this budget.

I often have to remind myself that I'm going to be unhappy with my yesterday self tomorrow, if this thing is not taken care of now. I try to make tomorrow me happy.

Storing like things together, like batteries, works best a lot of the time--but not always. Sometimes it's better to store things where they are needed for functionality. For instance: if you always need the same extension cord when using a particular tool or appliance, it makes more sense to store it where you store the tool or appliance, instead of out in the garage with all the other extension cords. I have a lot of artwork in my home, so I keep a small shoebox with assorted hooks, hangers, nails, picture wire, archival-grade tape, and other hardware needed to frame and/or hang pictures, along with a small tack hammer and a small pair of wire cutters, so that it doesn't take me 40 minutes to find (and put away) everything I need to hang something.
