  Note: Grigory Perelman&apos;s work is not, as far as I know, an area where Tao has special expertise. Generally, there is no reason to expect even a Fields Medalist to have a grasp of techniques in areas disparate from their own -- and with that in mind, Tao really does do an impressive job sketching out what Perelman did, within reasonable constraints and prerequisites. In fact, his ability to do this is quite unusual. Tao is a mathematician of quite extraordinary caliber.

  I used to live nearby Grigori before I moved to the UK, I&apos;m from Russia, Saint Petersburg.<br>Never talked to him but saw him in a grocery store multiple times. He is the definition of an introvert and seems to be very sociophobic person. He doesn&apos;t even respond to the cashier when they ask &quot;do you need a bag?&quot;, he just swings his palm either up and down, saying yes, or left and right, saying no. He constantly looks down, at the ground. But it doesn&apos;t make him a bad person, he is just strange, very unusual person, with extraordinary abilities.<br><br>UPD: Back then I didn&apos;t even know who he is. He was just a random weirdo for me back then, I even thought he&apos;s homeless but then saw him entering an apartment block where he apparently lives. Think about it next time you see such person :)

  What amazes me is not the mere fact he proved a ~100y old conjecture to be true but the fact he was able to concentrate on a single problem for 7y. Not throwing away his talent but it takes another form of a talent to have the will to concentrate for that long. I remember watching an interview of on of the school teachers of Grigory - he said that at Grigory was not the most “talented” boy as there was another who could solve mathematical problems for half the time Grigory needed. However, Grigory had tremendous stubbornness in pursuing solutions to various problems. A unique person, hope he is happy

  I remember high school math being, to me, so rewarding when you got a problem right, can you imagine the fucking feeling he had when he realizes : everything checks out…
