  Ironically, he gained more recognition by refusing the Fields Medal. As someone with little interest in mathematics, he is one of only three or four living mathematicians that I have ever heard of

  There are several reasons he declined the prize: 1) A specific controversy involved the proof of the Poincaré Conjecture. Although Perelman published a correct and revolutionary proof, there were concerns that other mathematicians were trying to claim undue credit for completing or interpreting his work. 2) He was upset Hamilton was not recognized as part of proof for the Ricci flows.

  Terrence Tao is such a great guy, I’ve watched a lot of his lectures and he always came across very nervous or atleast his style of speech didn’t lend itself too public speaking (which is all good)….very cool to hear him in longform here, he’s absolutely magnetic

  Perelman declining reminds me of Howard Florey, the Australia pharmacologist who discovered the manner in which penicillin can be used (by accident). He decided not to patent the &apos;invention / process&apos; in an attempt to keep the science &apos;free to all&apos;. Lost out financially, did save millions of lives
