  1969 My (5'2", 70 y/o) Mariner Dad was attacked by 2 young men at 2am in Downtown Baltimore.  The next morning the News Paper reported, "Two Thugs attacked Old Salt", he belays one and harpooned the other".  What happened was he clobbered the smaller of the two, putting him down.  When the larger one (5'11" 220#) grabbed my Dad in a Bear-hug, to try to control him.  Dad was wearing a Suit and reached into his inside jacket pocket and grabbed his ballpoint-pen and stabbed the fellow in the face several times, causing him to let go and run away.  Police driving by nabbed him, when they noticed he was holding his face while running.  He tried to tell the Police he had been attacked and was ordered to take them back to where it happened.  When they arrived and were apprised of the issue, they arrested both of the Perps.

  If a woman is attacked by a man in the street after dark, she should yell "Fire!". It will confuse her attacker and draw people's attention.

  I have been teaching martial arts and self-defence for over fifty years, and my half day self-defence course was rated best in the world in LA in 2004. The metal ballpoint (or metallic pencil - even better) is my favourite weapon. The way he says to hold it though is NOT the best way - it is too limiting. The torch MAY e useful but is severely limited in comparison with the pen and I 100% agree re /the key between the fingers. Taught in SO many course around the world  - it is RIDICULOUS!!! I don't agree with the keys being used as a weapon in ANY way. Pepper spray is good but may be illegal to carry and wasp spray is good because it travels quite a long way. Walking sticks and umbrellas (not the retractable ones) are great but need practice to become competent in using them. Otherwise - this is the most practical advice I have seen given, outside of my own half day program!

  I am in the uk i carry deodorant spray and a metal water bottle full of water on a chain we have very strict weapon laws

  But anywho you know that the slingshot like a good old wrist rocket either golf balls or fishing sinkers leaves an impression usually makes them back off and think twice
