  I was in the Merchant Navy back in the day when M/V Derbyshire sank in the South China Sea. We were heading north to Yokohama through the same area when a truly huge “growler” as you call it, crashed over the stern and breached the rear cargo hatch. Fortunately, our Captain had insisted that intermediate hatches were always closed irrespective of load condition, which meant that water didn’t fill the aft hatch (only the top one quarter) and would have sunk us in seconds had the intermediates been left open.

  Having just returned from a Pacific passage from Monterey Cali to Honolulu there are many points in this video I found super helpful. &nbsp;The ten gallons of water? &nbsp;Seasoned captain I crewed for did not have that. &nbsp;My ditch bag needs some updating. &nbsp;Thanks for this great video!

  so, i am my parents sailed a grand soleil german Frers 54 from Mallorca, Spain to Trinidad. <br>I left then thy sailed through the canal and up to Ensenada. honestly, what a boat.

  A bit of simple maths for anyone wondering why 50knts of wind feels like so much. <br><br>If you double the wind speed each air molicule is moving 2x so is carrying 4x the amount of energy (kinetic energy formula). However, your also being hit by double the number of mulicules per second so the power transfer from wind to boat is 8x. <br><br>So the power in the wind at 50knts is 8x 25kns, and 64x 12knts

  I&apos;ve just discovered your 50 knot storm video, which was awesome btw, and really enjoyed listening. My favourite part was about relying on electronic instruments. I agree 100% that they are useful, but not necessary. In my own experience I&apos;ve come to the conclusion that electronics do not change how you need to sail, they create anxiety around numbers rather than learning to see the wind and the sea conditions to guide your decisions. <br>I also agree with your comments about sail size. I love my high cut Yankee for its ease of use and visibility. Old school still rules in cruising!

  There is a famous Brazilian sailor call Amyr Klink That made a circumnavigation in the southern ocean with a aluminum boat and he used a aerorig like that that survived a serious nockdown with it and got away with no damage. <br>The boat is called Paratii and Amyr &nbsp;is a famous polar sailor close friend of Skip Novack.
