  I &quot;met&quot; him in about 1988 at Ft Hood while I was a tanker with D Co. 3/32 AR. They were doing some research on the history of the unit and discovered that Mr. Pool was still alive and living in Texas. He was brought to Ft. Hood a couple of times and given a grand welcome. Memories are a bit vague from that time but an M1 was given a new name .. &quot;In the mood&quot; painted on the gun tube and Mr. Pool was in the commander&apos;s hatch as the tank was brought in front of the entire Battalion standing in formation in the Motor Pool. Speeches were given and we were brought to attention and saluted the man. I remember the grin on his face ... all the awards in the world don&apos;t mean as much as the respect show to him that day. <br> <br>One time they had a canopy erected on a hill overlooking where a tank company maneuvered against another. Mr. Pool and his wife were in seats under the canopy so he could watch those tanks maneuver. He had a Major acting as an aide who had a radio to talk to those &nbsp;units. Mr. Pool was not impressed by some of that maneuvering and critiqued it. This was passed on and the operation was repeated after those critiques. <br> <br>During this I was there as a &quot;Goofer&quot; bringing bottles of cold water and sandwiches to Mr. Pool and his wife. <br> <br>It was a great day.

  Not only was “In The Mood” a much better name, it’s the name of Glenn Miller’s most popular song. And mind you, Glenn Miller ended up joining the US Army Air Corps. So them changing the name of the tank for the movie was a shame on 2 fronts.

  What a lot of people forget is that many of these folks were rejected from a very small, peacetime military.<br>One that could afford to set very high standards - because the economy wasn&apos;t good, and they had more applicants than they needed.<br>Once demand increased more waivers were given.

  Don&apos;t worry this doesn&apos;t spoil the film Fury at all. What happens in that movie is very different to the real history of this &quot;War Daddy.&quot; After hearing this story I wish they&apos;d made/make a movie about Lafayette Pool, because this story is so much cooler.

  The primary reason eyesight was key was because there were no contacts and in a bad situation someone getting their glasses knocked off would be really, really bad in combat. <br><br>I do love that you don&apos;t wilt at Nic&apos;s language. His coarseness has kept me from recommending him to a few of my friends who would. Love the vids!

  You can ask any service member, but especially field oriented ones and ones that work or help &nbsp;in maintaining equipment. Turning in your gear is one of the most infuriating processes you’ll ever go through.

  In The Mood was a great Glen Miller big band song from the 1940&apos;s. Recorded and released in 1939, it was a top swing band number played throuout the 1940s on the radio stations of the day.

  The Fat Electrician did mention he&apos;s currently working on Lieutenant Colonel Blair &quot;Paddy&quot; Mayne, one of the founders of the British SAS - also featured in the BBC series &quot;SAS Rogue Heroes.&quot; Be on the lookout for that. 😉
