  i met him and called him and joked with him about being an air winger. My Marines were in shock and he walked over and saw my medals on my chest and gave me a coin of his. He said "Doc you are a hero to every Marine". I said to him "damn Gunny, i was wanting to get yelled at by you". I told him that coin would be with me while deployed. I still have the coin.

  I went thru Marine Corps boot camp in 1968 and this portrayal is about 85% accurate. We were struck more often.  Fist to the plexus and only slaps to the face.  I was 24 when I went thru and terrified the first couple of days and I can’t imagine what the 17 to 19 year olds were going thru.   But, we became what the corps wanted us to be.

  R. Lee Ermey was a real Marine drill instructor. There was no script for this scene. He completely improvised every line.

  R. Lee Ermey was indeed retired from the U.S. Marine Corps and was an actual Drill Instructor so one would assume that it's pretty accurate. The worst I can recall is when we blew a barracks inspection two or three weeks in. For the next week, any time our Company Commander (Navy for D.I.) came into the barracks, instead of coming to attention wherever we were (as required by regulations), we had to go to a position known as "'bows & toes". This was basically a push up position only the fingers were laced behind the neck with your weight resting on your elbows. We remained in that position while he walked around the barracks dressing us down. One of the guys laughed at something the CC said and, the next he knew, the CC was standing on his shoulders screaming at him for laughing.

  R. Lee Ermey was a real Marine D.I. and originally he was only hired as a consultant to teach the actor who was going to play Gny. Sgt. Hartman how to do it, but when he was showing the director and the original actor how it truly worked the director was so impressed that he gave Ermey the role and the actor who was going to be the D.I. showed up later in the film as the helicopter gunner.

  The name, "Gomer Pyle", was a character played by Jim Nabors on The Andy Griffith Show. He starred in the "spin off" series,  Gomer Pyle USMC. Pyle was a good 'ol  hayseed working at a rural gas station on the Andy Griffith Show before heading to the Corps.

  HE WAS A REAL MARINE CORP DRILL INSTRUCTOR AND WE ALL WENT THROUIGH EXACTLY WHAT YOU ARE VIEWING.  EVEN THE CHOKING,   ACTUALLY WATCHED A DRILL INSTRUCTOR CHOKE A GUY IN MY PLATOON UNCONCISOUS UNTILL HE WAS PUKING, THE DRILL INSTRUCTORS CALLED IT DOING THE CHICKEN BECAUSE YOU SHAKE WHEN GETTING CHOKED.

  When i heard this. I only heard a few phrases that  were  new to me.   I had heard most of those  things from DIs in 1976 at MCRD San Fiego
