R Lee Ermey aka Sgt Hartman was an actual DI during Vietnam War. Ermey was hired as a consultant and assisted an actor who supposed to play Hartman. But Kubrick seeing Ermey's actions and adlibbed orders like a true DI. Kubrick hired Ermey as Hartman. Ermey based on DI who goes overboard in training. Because he stated that Pyle would have been Section Eight being mentally unfit becoming a Marine.

Always makes me grin when I watch civilians react to this. My drill instructors were the scariest and at the same time funniest people I have ever met. I thank God for letting me be a part of the U.S. Military!

The last reaction guy asked if it was like that? My brother served 20 years in navy and several as drill instructor in great lakes. I asked him in the 80's if it was really like this, he said yes, sometimes worse. They were all broken down so they could grow as one fighting unit. I miss you big brother. Peace from Northern Michigan.

It took 2 or 3 takes for the intro scene with Sgt. Hartman. The donut eating scene took 37 takes.

Back in the mid 80's and before both the Army and Marine Corp basic training camps Drill Sargents were exactly this way. There philosophy was if we go to war together and we are coming back together! They were hard and very strict. They job is to mold you, train you, to make you be the best you can be, so hopefully you don't come home in a body bag and they actually cared and did it for you, your family and country!
