The Canberra line should be extended into Canberra central or have a tram to the station !

The Picton loop was actually built because the Picton mayor kept complaining that the line would have bypassed them lmao.

The Sydney-Canberra-Melbourne corridor is in the top 10 busiest air corridors in the world. Prime candidate for high speed rail, but they've been um-ing and ah-ing over it for like 50 years with still zero progress. In that time Spain has HSR covering the whole country. I tried the overnight train but the quality of the track was so poor we were trundling along wobbling side to side all night, almost gave me motion sickness

It's a surprise that the Sydney to Canberra route gets such poor frequency. Melbourne to Warrnambool runs more trains per day, on a similar length route, and Warrnambool is less than a tenth the population of Canberra.

You'd think things would change with the introduction of the R sets.

Ex Sydney driver here. Picton (and the station is nowhere near the centre of town) should be bypassed as well as the deviations between Moss Vale and Exeter, and Marulan and Talong which were once straight but had the track realigned to go around hills rather than over them to ease the grade for the steam locos of the dark ages. BTW, on the northern line Borragul got a station for the same reason. The line once went straight from Fassifern to Treralba and there'd be plenty more. Don't get me started on the south coast line. As for Canberra Station, can anyone think of a railway station of a national capital that has only one platform at the end of a dead end spur off a branch line that's been closed for decades? I've been to the stations in Rome, London, Madrid, and Washington and they're a little different to Canberra.

5:08 an extension of this point is that Canberra is very car dependent witih awful public transport options and a very sprawled city design. This ultimately means that, for a short stay in Canberra, getting around without a car is very difficult and it becomes increasingly worth it to drive simply to have your car with you while you're there.

There used to be four stations or sidings on the Canberra line. After leaving Queanbeyan the train would stop at Kingston, then over a causeway and wooden trestle bridge over the Molongo River to stations or sidings at Russell, Reid, then terminating at the Canberra Station which is now Garema Place. The Molongo River rail bridge was washed away in a flood, sometime in the 1920's?, and it was never replaced, hence the Kingston Station became the Canberra Station.

We dont really need high speed rail, just moderately fast rail with limited and quick stops would work fine. Constant speed, terminate in city centres and resonably price it would still be a great option to flying. While there are headline high speed trains in Europe most are just normal trains and it is an incredibly easy and effective way to get around.

One of the most significant improvements would be to extend the line at Canberra to somewhere people want to go. It was originally intended to reach the city center and it is time to actually do it.

One of the big issue as an occassional user of the service, is the lack of wifi and mobile cell don鈥檛 follow the railway line, but do follow the car highway.

I'm so happy that this is actually happening. It's funny that the government furthest along with HSR are also the most realistic about its timeframe.

IMO a Y-Link towards Melbourne would also be useful in the short term, even if it's just to gauge demand for a proper line to Yass.
