Being Flemish myself, I'd like to explain a fundamental technique which you have not covered.
The Van Eyck brothers, who painted one of the most precious paintings in the world (which has unfortunately been ruined by careless restoration) used oak to paint on. Before they started painting they covered the oak panels with a base layer of chalk mixed with rabbit skin glue, followed by a layer of linseed oil, sometimes mixed with lead white or other pigments. The end result was a layer that insulated the wood and looked like the surface of a billiard ball. This layer reflected incoming light through several translucent layers of highly diluted oil paint. This is very noticeable in painted jewellery. Light that falls onto the painting traverses all paint layers, reaches the reflective base layer and comes back out of the painting, making the details ultra-realistic and life-like.

Interestingly, the original reason the "underpainting-glaze" technique was used had as much to do with the transition from egg tempera to oil painting as it did color perception. Tempera dries too quickly to do alla-prima painting, so multi-layer techniques were required. In fact, many earlier flemish oil paintings used tempera or tempera grassa mediums for the underpainting, and only used pure oils for the color layers.

Thank you so very much! I am a beginner artist. I'm working on simple construction and small 2-3 value drawings. Watching your approach is so helpful to decouple color and value as I have difficulty perceiving both accurately at the same time.

I used to be very into makeup and even starting with, well skin...I often had more than 7 layers to achieve a skin-like finish. I'm surprised and pleased to see their similarity!

1. Luminous primer (achieving the light reflection through the later layers)
2. Color correction
3. Spot concealer
4. Small amounts of foundation to even tone (similar to umber underpainting)
5. Contour (deeping values like the dead underpainting)
6. Blush/Bronzer (color step)
7. Highlight (detail)
8. Translucent setting powder (to improve diffusion and hide subtle imperfections)
9. Setting spray (aka fixative)

Dear Min, I am painting very much from feelings. If I have to think of all this I go back too much to thinking and interfere w my feelings. I think you have to learn all this when you are young so it gets a routine, or through years of study. It is really very interesten what you do, and😊 thank you for sharing! I will try to but do not know yet if it will work for me.
