  I read once in a 17th century book about oil painting, that the purpose of making a dead layer or 'Dood-Verf' (meaning no colour) was to make the painter's life easier. It was (According to the master from that era) a method of spreading out the difficulty of labour between set sections, so that when ultimately combined, it appeared (to the client) as if the work took much more effort than it really did. Your insight about blending smooth transitions is helpful. The knowledge base for oil painting is a shallow ocean: Easy to stand in, but a lifetime to traverse.

  Love the video! But I’m pretty sure that Leonardo used warm shades of brown for the underpainting instead of using black and white

  im new to oil. the multiple grey / dead underpaintings makes so much sense. for edits smoothing out gradients. ive done 3 on my current piece. tonal changes and light. this video is SUPER helpful.

  I think this way of painting is the best for learning the fundamentals because you split the drawing , values , and colors up into sections so by the end of the painting you’re getting reps in all of those categories each time
