  I actually met Mako when I was a kid at a comic-con to get his autograph. He asked who my favorite character was and I said Zuko. He was confused because the actor who played him was also there and he asked why I wanted his. I told him my younger brother loved Iroh which he loved and asked where was he. <br>I told him my brother had died of leukemia a few months prior and started tearing up right there. He signed it and wrote something nice, which we went back and overlayed on my brother&apos;s tombstone. I remember asking him what would Iroh say and Mako said, &quot;Iroh would say to remember all the great things and cherish what was, not be sad about what never was.&quot; <br>I asked him, what do you say? With tears and a smile he said, &quot;Some things are out of our control and make us sad, but never forget what makes you happy.&quot;<br>Mako died only a year later..

  My nephew the other day called me his Iroh. It was the most profound compliment I have ever had in my life, I was so grateful to be me; in a non self centred way.

  What I like about the scene of Iroh grieving for his son, is that it shows that Zuko isn’t a replacement. No one can replace his son and no one could probably replace Zuko

  <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_EXe79Sn7iM&amp;t=1367">22:47</a> Fun fact, Greg Baldwin (the voice actor who replaced Mako) still to this day introduces himself as &quot;someone who does a good impression of Uncle Iroh&quot;. He refuses to take credit for the character and always pays tribute to Mako.

  Iroh&apos;s memorial for his son is under 1 minute long. I&apos;ve never once been able to watch it without weeping openly. It&apos;s probably the single most effective tearjerker I&apos;ve ever seen put to screen.

  “It is important to draw wisdom from many different places. If you only draw it from one place, it becomes rigid and stale,” I think is such an underrated gem and it’s one of the most profound pieces of advice Iroh ever gave.<br><br>Studying other cultures, other ways of life, and learning from them is one of the greatest ways you can grow as a person, and that’s always a good thing.

  What&apos;s beautiful about Iroh is he was clearly a dangerous man back in the day. He was named for his ferocity, and was laying siege to Ba Sing Se and got further than anyone else ever had at the time. But the moment his son died he realized the futility in it all, and that the pain of the war hurt everyone equally, so he gave up and went home. He was mocked for it, but Iroh became a different person from his experience. He became a better person through bad events, and learned from them. It&apos;s one of those moments where it would feel lesser if his wisdom came from things like reading or general knowledge, but with being a man of actual experience, it makes his character feel complete. He is in my top 3 characters of all time.

  I think it&apos;s often overlooked, but people wrote the lines Iroh says. Props to them for organizing so much wisdom in a way for all ages to resonate with

  I realized something about Iroh. In spite of the fact that he&apos;s just a fictitious character from a show, and a highly idealized and perfect individual, there is really nothing stopping us from behaving like him. What&apos;s more, you can never be too old to emulate him. From now until we all die, we can never age out of the persona of Iroh. He is a role model for life.
