  &quot;Why did Ozai have children.&quot; Monarchy 101, he NEEDS an heir and a spare. &nbsp;Otherwise the nobles of the Fire Nation would see him an an INVALID ruler. &nbsp;One of the big reasons Ozai managed to usurp the position of Firelord from Iroh (who was first in line of succession) was because Iroh&apos;s son died and thus he could not sustain the dynasty. &nbsp;Meanwhile Ozai had TWO children, ensuring the stability of government going forward. &nbsp;He didn&apos;t have kids because he wanted to be a father, he had kids because he wanted to be Fire Lord, and having those kids helped his claim to the throne.

  I never thought about how bad Iroh had it growing up with Azulon for a father, Sozin as a grandfather, &amp; Ozai as a brother. How he managed to be a good person despite all that is so impressive.

  “Fun” facts about the Fire Nation Royal Family:<br>1) Ursa &amp; Ozai weren’t a love match. The Fire Sages predicted that a child of the Fire Lord’s bloodline and Avatar Roku’s bloodline would be an incredibly powerful Firebender. However, after Avatar Roku died, his descendants tried to hide from the Fire Lord until Ursa &amp; her parents were found in a small Fire Nation village. So part of why Ozai hates Zuko is because Ozai felt like he was sold a bill of false goods when his firstborn child had average Firebending talent instead of being born breathing Fire or shooting lighting out of his baby fists.<br>2) Ursa had a life before the Fire Sages showed up &amp; told her she’d be marrying the Fire Lord’s second son. In fact, her boyfriend had just proposed to her that same afternoon. And after their wedding, Ozai cut Ursa off from all of her friends, family, and loved ones (and tried to assassinate her boyfriend). So when Zuko was born &amp; Ursa saw he was more compassionate than his father, Ursa loved him &amp; imagined he was the child she had with her true love. So, another reason why Ozai hates Zuko.

  I would challenge the claim that Azula was able to earn Ozai&apos;s love. I think she earned his <b>approval*... just as long as she reflected *him.</b> The one time she shows vulnerability and imperfection, he&apos;s immediately harsh. That&apos;s not love having been earned. That&apos;s, &quot;Don&apos;t you dare make <b>my</b> reflection weak.&quot;

  You know banishing Zuko was intended as a punishment but Ozai banishing Zuko was the best thing he did as a parent. It took time, but Zuko being away from that toxic environment, being around his amazing therapist uncle, seeing the world and the true damage that the fire nation did, and making friends with the avatar gang helped Zuko to choose a better path and eventual break the cycle. Plus, he only had one daughter, not two children as to not have them in competition with each other like he and Azula did.
