I've been trying to wrap my head around the GridBoss and its various connections (from the grid, to the main panel, and other loads), and your video has made it clear and easy to understand. Thanks for keeping it simple without missing the important points. Cheers!

In Arizona, subpanels within the same structure have bonded neutrals. I learned this because two different inspectors red tagged my workshop, once because it was bonded and then because it was not. The chief inspector got the book out and showed me the code, detached workshop not bonded. Next house, with attached workshop is bonded.

This was by far the best install video I've seen to date. Every question I had, you answered! I missed out on the tax credit. Oh well, time to order and get started with 2 Flexboss 21's and grid boss. Thanks for all your help!

I just want to thank you for your videos about installing the Flexboss and Gridboss. I recently installed this along with two 314 amp hour batteries. This combination was pretty easy to install and works like a champ. Thanks for the info!

Usually CAT7 cables are only grounded on one end, so you did the right thing. For the precisely the reason you stated.

One thing you will find is that with everything set to SOC mode you really have to ensure that the battery bank is charged to full at least once a week. The SOC tracking gets off really quickly... and I do mean really quickly. After the first week of winter I had to change my configuration to be voltage based because it was getting mightily confused thinking that the bank was at like 60% when it was empty, and I didn't want to fully charge the bank from the grid.

In retrospect I think it would have been fine to top-off the battery in the evening, and it would be drawn-down enough by morning that I wouldn't leave any solar on the table. Then I could have just stayed with the SOC settings. But I was also trying to avoid there being inverter noise at night. YMMV.

Here are my other working mode settings:

SOC SETTINGS: (that I use)

Off-grid cut-off 0% (5% is fine too)
On-grid cut-off: 15%
AC charge start SOC: 10%
AC charge stop SOC: 15%

VOLTAGE SETTINGS: (that I use)

For voltage based controls I use an off-grid cut-off of 46V and on-grid cut-off at 51V.
AC charge start V: 48V
AC charge stop V: 51V

--

I also have a Peak Shaving configuration and a PV charge priority configuration setup to help during winter. During summer time the battery levels are high enough that neither is triggered.

Peak Shaving: (VOLTAGE SETTINGS): Start V: 52V (SOC SETTINGS): 50% From midnight to 8AM
PV Charge Priority: (VOLTAGE SETTINGS): Stop V: 53V (SOC SETTINGS): Stop SOC: 40% From NOON to 3PM

I have peak shaving setup to only run overnight when there's no solar power to charge the battery to a minimum SOC during winter when the solar isn't enough. In summer it is never triggered.

And I have the PV Charge priority setup to give the solar time to recover overnight usage (hence why I don't start until noon). If it doesn't get there by noon it directs all solar power to charging the batteries and uses the grid for loads. This again is only triggered during winter on bad days. In summer it is never triggered.

My settings are based on a fairly large 42kWh battery capacity so I have a lot of wiggle room with regards to not wasting solar energy by hitting 100% early because my Peak Shaving or PV Charge priority settings put too much into the battery.

--

AC charging from grid. I think you will quickly find that you will want to run a higher power level for AC charging just to ensure that it makes progress against house loads. I have mine to set to 3kW. And my peak-shaving power level is set to 2.8kW, also designed to ensure at least a little progress against house loads but not so much that the fan turns on strongly. Same with AC charging.

Finally, I have my house wired to the BACKUP lugs (as should everyone, more or less), but I mostly leave my Grid Boss's bypass breakers set to leave the house on the grid-side of the GB. This allows me to mess around with the system, reboot stuff, take the inverter offline, and so on and so forth without interrupting the house. Once I'm comfortable enough I'll leave the GB bypass on backup mode (putting the house on the backup side of the GB).

-Matt

Your video wasn't up yet when I installed the 200 amp breaker, all that was available on youtube is those 2 old guys yapping for 30 mins and not showing enough. And the one guy that sped through it in high speed mode and camera was nowhere near the area of concern. But man, I did it 😂👊

Your videos are absolutely awesome!! I ordered my Flex Boss and Grid Boss today! Anxiously waiting for them to arrive. Thank you again. I watched all four of them.

Great video by the way nicely done with in depth detail.

I know you likely had all that PVC pipe and fittings laying around, but it would’ve been super swell to have started with a gutter below your electrical panel and then set the grid box on top of the gutter with the proper fittings. 😊
Ok. Ok. 48:48, you mention the wire trough.

WOW....WAY ABOVE AVERAGE JOE....Super job....I finished a gridboss and two flexboss 21 install 5 weeks ago. The configuration is still 50% mysterious to me....It's running....but....still trying to understand all the configuration settings....I could not have it running today without SigSolar's great help. My 36 panels and two flexboss inverters are 220 feet from the Gridboss installation. Thank for your excellent video.
