I called National Grid and asked them to upgrade the main fuse. They gave me an appointment within two weeks, they upgraded the main fuse to 100amps, changed the tails to the meter, ran an electrical impedance test and sorted an issue with the earth, all for free. My electrician had already upgraded the tails from the meter to the consumer unit as part of a rewire and having a new CU fitted.

Thank you Jordan, a superb detailed video, you covered some aspects I'd not considered i.e. SPD. Your openness to share your experience is incredibly refreshing and appreciated!

So glad I didn´t see this before I bought an EV. I just plugged it in to a simple plug with a granny cable and it charges overnight on cheap electricity. Costs peanuts, works perfectly and has served me well for two years.

I bought a new house in 2022 which has an air source heat pump. We were told at the time that a cable running to a junction box in the garage was so an electric car charging unit could be installed easily. Thanks to the detailed information in this video, I’m seriously considering buying my first EV at 70 years old 😊

Really useful thanks. We went with an untethered charger because we wanted a 10m cable. We have two cars to charge and one has to park further from the charger location. Most tethered chargers have a 7m cable at most, which wouldn’t be long enough for us. We just bought a black cable and it stays plugged in to the charger so neither of those issues are a problem. So if you need a longer lead, go untethered

This is a really valuable insight into what needs thinking about. Thank you for being so comprehensive and honest about what is needed and all the different scenarios depending on the age of the property. This is really useful - thank you so much! 😊

We had a charging point professionally installed in 2018. Three years later as I decided to get rid of my EV the charger packed up and of course it was JUST outside the warranty. The supplier wanted £600 to fit a replacement unit. I wasn't going to pay that when I didn't even have an EV.
Now of course we are going for one but I'm shocked to find out we have to arrange for a new one ourselves as the dealer (Ford) doesn't get involved in that sort of thing! My last EV had charger installation in the price! WTF?
Whatever, I'm not paying full whack when the site survey has been completed and the infrastructure already installed.

Such an useful video. I sent email to the installer asking if they can put that fuse box inside, not outside. He said that he could put it inside but then i wont get ct clamp installed. Then i read that cables cant be run through cavity walls as its against regulations. Today he will be installing the charger and he will be putting that fuse box outside, as he explained this way its secure with ct clamp. I dont know, i know nothing about electrics, but at least i did my research.

What I am trying to write, is that, if you know absolutely nothing, you will think that electrician did an amazing job where in fact it could be a bad job.
