This is the most concise straightforward informative video I have seen on this subject. It is definitely worth saving for reference.

You've been doing some good videos here explaining these somewhat difficult concepts. Good job!

As usual, great presentation Ape.

If it's easy to lower your antenna (wire antenna or tilt over tower, etc...) a easy way to cancel out the effects of your feedline is to calibrate your antenna analyzer/VNA with a precision 50 Ohm load on the antenna end of the coax. Remove the load, reconnect the antenna and raise it back up to it's operating position. Now you can sweep/analyze your antenna having removed (as best as possible) the effects of your feedline.

That was excellent Dr. Ape. If you recorded a part II where you ran the 6 step diagnostic sequence on a real antenna system with some discussion about interpreting the information at each step and what corrective steps, if any, were indicated, I think that would help a lot of folks.

If you aren’t an RF engineer, you fooled me! There are so many misconceptions about antennas and losses, and you covered these aspects so well. Antenna acceptance is hardly ever discussed or considered, I don’t think it’s understood. And the misconception that reflected power is not lost power, you did a good job explaining the factors without going into too much detail. Anyone using AE6TY’s SimNec can quickly model that and much more to see how every element of their antenna systems really work. I’d really like to see you do some videos with SimNec to support these situations you covered in this video.

Excellent video!!

Well done Ape. It can be conceptually very confusing for those who have not seen this informaiton before, but keep producing good videos like this anyway! Knowledge is power.

PS. The shunt capacitance in the 49:1 acts as tuned parallel LC tank circuit for the upper bands where the transformation within the core becomes increasingly lossy. By using a simple tank circuit on the primary, we gain effeciency for the band on which it is tuned, and that's right were the ferrite begins to have trouble. It's a hybrid of sorts between magnetic coupling for the lower bands, and tuned tank + coupling on the higher bands. That's my opinion anyway. We often prefer to have a device like the 49:1 that requires no adjustment and does "OK" on the bands we present it to. A much better solution is to use a tank circuit and tap off that circuit to feed the load. The problem is that now we have adjustments ot make for each frequency. That's the price we pay for high effeciency.

Keep up the good work OM. 73
🎙👍

Should I be concerned about high reactance on a receive only small loop antenna? But when it is at resonance the resistance is about 500 ohms.
