I love that you guys say song writing is a journey over a instant success, expressing yourself over being clever, a song make sense without explaining what it means...I had that recently...someone took 30 minutes to explain what their song meant...I never listened to that song again...

Performing my songs for others to hear gives me the opportunity to receive instant feedback as to how a song is received. Open mics are great for this, especially if folks are hearing the usual covers, and then it stands out when they hear an original, does it pull them in, listen to the audience, "oohs!" , "yeah!" and such can be telling. Sometimes folks will approach you to tell of something they heard that got their attention. So, yeah, play your songs to audiences. Also, get some 'game tape' to review by videoing your performance that also catches audience feedback, etc....

Non-standard chords are like having variations of a color. Some crayon boxes have only the three primary colors, red, yellow and blue. One can make beautiful art with just those. Sometimes, however, maybe that blue could be more descriptive as a light blue, or a red-orange? Sometimes a variation is integral to the hook.
