Fun fact if you pause the game here the music pauses too, while for every other track it keeps going

There's even one more gut punch right after the music box phase - when you enter the Cogwork Core and it's ALSO a remix of the Dancers theme, but subtle enough that it takes a while for it to sink in. Most area leitmotifs are reused for their bosses, but the way you fight the Dancers BEFORE the area and then get to hear their theme in the entire next area, after still being emotionally messed up by the end of the fight, just rubs it in even harder.

This is absolute proof of video games' unique traits as an art form. The complete emotional devastation of that 4th phase could not hit you the same way with any other medium, without being paired with each other. You don't have the context for the story of these characters yet when you get to this fight, but the combination of game mechanics and music together already makes you feel exactly what you should be if you did have it. This and receiving the architect melody are indescribable emotional moments that couldn't work in any other medium.

14:30 Nerdy nitpick time! The dancer actually goes slightly slower than originally in phase 4 — attacking at 48 actions per minute rather than 60. That's another reason it feels "laughably easy", aside from the whole "only one dancer left" part.

I feel very validated by how frequently you bring up Tchaikovsky because I've been saying this song sounds a bit like a Nutcracker any% speedrun for months.

I also like how Phase 4 subverts your expectations for how a duo boss works. Normally after you kill one, the remaining partner enters an enraged state where they gain additional attacks or get faster. Yet for the Cogwork dancers, it's the opposite.

I finished that fight by throwing a boomerang right as the lone dancer went in for the bladestorm attack, only to float there instead of triggering the attack, staring at the empty space in front of it, as if it were saying, "Where... are... they...?" right as my boomerang pulled back around to smash it in its face for the final strike. Not only was it a very cinematic way to end the fight, the dancer staring into the space its partner should be only to then be greeted instead by my boomerang to finish it off felt like a cruelty. It was awesome.

I also love how while phase 3 largely drops the ballet parallels to become more frantic, the stretched out motif played on horns is still extremely ballet. It feels straight out of the transformation in swan lake.

While not all characters in this game have obvious real world inspiration, these seem to me like Crickets, which are so often shown as deeply musical in fiction. They get associated with violins, despite many of their songs being far more clicky than that. What better choice for a cricket boss than a pair of clicking-ticking dancers, dancing to a violin ballet.

Also, those are mating calls irl. Which is fitting for the tragic love story both within and around this boss.
