AMERICAN REACTS to German Prisons

The main difference is that German prisons focus on rehabilitation and human dignity, while American prisons focus primarily on punishment and isolation. Germany has zero private, for-profit prisons. The United States uses private prison corporations that rely on high inmate populations to make money.German prison sentences are much shorter, and overall incarceration rates are far lower. Article 1 of the German Constitution states that human dignity is inviolable. Courts apply this rule directly to prisoners, meaning the state must try to prepare inmates to re-enter society. Germany reshaped its post-war legal and penal systems specifically to reject authoritarian cruelty after the abuses of the Nazi era. The U.S. system developed through a political focus on strict deterrence and tough-on-crime policies, fueled in some areas by the financial interests of private prison companies.

Personally I've never been to a prison for adults but to one for teens and young adults. During eleventh grade we had an elective we could choose where we went to prison once a week over one year to make art with the inmates. For us, after the first few weeks, it was just super normal.
It sounds a little weird, to have a class dedicated to make art in a prison. But we had a lot of fun with the guys, drew comics or designs for graffiti, etc. And while they could pass some time with this, they also had contact to people outside their 'inmate bubble' through this programm, with different genders and social backgrounds. And especially to people their age who were in a phase of their lives where they were thinking a lot about their plans and dreams and what they want to do with their lives. It got the inmates thinking and talking about plans and dreams and perspectives, too. All just in passing, while we all were just having fun together and talking and doodleing.

Was a good time, and thinking back I still have to applaud the person who came up with that concept. A lot of the guys started school or apprenticeships after that, all available for them in prison.

I'am a german and i'am proud of it! Because human rights are guaranteed also in prison...because we see not only criminals, we also see humans. And for me it is the "german" thing...but it is also truth, that not every german thinks like that.

I live in Germany and my father's cousin works as a reintegration counselor for long-term inmates. Depending on the length of their incarceration, the program begins up to one year before their release.
He explains to them what they don't know, for example, how new technologies work or what has changed in social life. He also helps them with everything that is necessary with the authorities and with applying for benefits. He helps them find and furnish an apartment. In the final phase, he goes shopping with them several times a day or shows them the city where they will live in the future. How and where they can get involved in various clubs or volunteer work, and many other things. So that they are as well prepared as possible on the day of their release and not left feeling lost.

Yes, Strac, inmates can do their master's degree -- or a batchelor, or a non-academic vocation (depending on the prison's opportunities).
I can't tell you much more than that as I've never been in a prison, but as you've see in the video, the inmates have TV sets -- and I believe computers/laptops, too. So they don't completely disconnect from society while being in prison.
Very best wishes from Germany

There are less people in prison in germany than in the us. In germany the country runs the prisons, in the us it is a business.

In all prisons you have the Chance to study or learn a Job for the time afterwards. The Goal IS to get you socialized for the time after. Rehabilitation ! Not in a Cage for the Rest of your live! Btw: trying to escape the prison IS No crime, but only Natural Instinkt to BE free! (Not If you injure anybody).

German prison inmates definitely treat other inmates differently if they commited certain crimes against children.
