Proof that you don’t need a villain to have a phenomenal story and film.

I'm so glad it has a happy ending. I get tired of cool space movies being so depressing. I love scifi but we need fun too. This was so cute!!!

Stratt's job was nothing BUT "hard choices". In the book they go into all the terrible (but necessary) things she does. Even Grace realizes in hindsight it was the right choice. He tells her as much in the message he sends back with the probe. I love the way Sandra Hüller played Stratt. She knew her job was to make the no-win choices. But she knew SOMEONE had to, and she accepted the burden.

such a beautiful movie. the friendship hit my heart so much. and this fact that he was chosen because he had no one already. like you're treated as less important that way. and then he finds a true friend. it was so moving

52:42 - Rocky's atmosphere is 29 times the pressure of ours, mostly ammonia, and a temperature of 210°C (410°F). Eridians don't do well in oxygen, which the Hail Mary was practically entirely filled with.

Rocky broke his way out of his enclosed section into an aggressively cold environment where the air burned him alive. It'd be like if we stepped naked into an arctic winter where there was no air to breathe and we were surrounded by fluoride gas that burned our skin extwa cwispy, if given enough time. Then he flipped some switches, carried Grace around for a bit, crawled back into his bubble and re-sealed it before collapsing.

The fact that this movie is almost 3 hours and you don’t really feel it, still blows my mind. When I saw this as a preview last year, even without special effects, I knew it was going to be a hit. The book was perfect and the movie captured the heart of the story so well. Every time I watch this, I cry. Really wish I had gone to watch this in IMAX, I can only imagine how it would have looked.

PS. I’m not sure if you understood why Grace called Rocky’s mate Adrian, have you seen Rocky the movie, with Silvester Stallone?

Some fun facts. Rocky is mostly practical puppetry. He had five puppeteers controlling him most of the time with the exception of several of the ball scenes. The puppeteer team was called the Rocketeers on set and the primary puppeteer, James Ortiz also voiced Rocky. He was on set reading lines with Gosling and bantering on set and their chemistry was so good, they kept his voice instead of dubbing it over with a more well known actor which was in the original plan. The interior and exterior of the Hail Mary is practical and there were no greenscreen or bluescreen. They obviously used visual effects and cgi to gloss over the more complicated puppetry and removed any wires or rods that would have been visible. And when cgi was used for Rocky it was after scanning miniatures of Rocky and making sure to copy the puppetry movements. Also the author is a bit of a fan of puns and double meanings. The biggest is Hail Mary, full of Grace being part of humanity's last hope.

How many sun's lol🤣. - In our own Milky Way galaxy alone, there are roughly 300 to 400 billion stars.

Ryland Grace was in a Coma for 4 years. In that time the ship Hail Mary traveled 11 light years to the sun that had not dimmed, the star Tau Ceti. It seems impossible based on the fact that nothing can travel faster than the speed of light. However with constant acceleration the ship was able to reach a maximum of .92-.95 the speed of light and time slows down for objects traveling close to light speed. So for Grace it has been 4 years, but 12-13 years have passed back on Earth. That is why he asks Eva what she plans to do for the next 20 years. 12 years for ship to get out there and then maybe a little less time for probes to get back since they might be able to accelerate faster than human bodies can stand, movie didn’t say much about that. Anyway, she looks a lot older at the end of the movie since it has been 24-26 years for her on Earth.

When he does the math , Grace realizes that they have nearly empty fuel tanks , since Earth didn’t have time to make fuel for a trip home. With the fuel they have, the engines can only operate a short time and then the ship would need to coast with engines off, saving a small amount to stop the ship when it gets to Earth. His calculations show a return trip would take 113 years. So he gets really depressed.
