Grace is a scientist and Rocky is an engineer, Rocky sat for 40 years not making a breakthrough with the astrophage because he didn&apos;t have Eridian scientists for ideas, Grace could not have made the fishing device or breeder tanks without Rocky designing and making them. Another hail mary that they happened to find eachother.

  He wasn&apos;t traveling faster than light. The trip is 4+ years just from his perspective, it takes 13+ years from Earth&apos;s perspective. He reached a speed of about 92% light speed so he experienced time dilation due to special relativity. By the time the probes returned to earth, about 27 years had passed since the Hail Mary had left Earth.

  Rocky has an eidetic memory. He only needs to hear Grace say something in human English one time and he remembers. That’s why the laptop doesn’t need to also play back an English to Eridian translation for him. 😊

  Grace knew exactly where to find Rocky because he had calculated the route for him himself. Eridians didn&apos;t know about relativity, so they calculated their initial mission with classical mechanics formulas and messed up (which is why Rocky had waaay too much fuel and was able to share with the Hail Mary). For the return trip, Grace helped him with the math. The only problem was, Grace didn&apos;t know exactly when Rocky&apos;s engines would cut off, so he still had to do some fishing.<br>I really love the idea that the aliens are neither way more advanced nor more primitive than humans; rather, we have more knowledge in some areas, and they in other areas, and collaboration is beneficial for everyone. Grace gave Rocky a laptop with all human knowledge, and Rocky gave him xenonite to send to Earth.

  I don&apos;t know why, but the thing that makes me smile the most, in the beginning Grace teaches children sound waves, which we can&apos;t see. And in the end he asks the Eridians about the speed of light, which they can&apos;t see. Don&apos;t know if that was on purpose or coincidence, but I thought it&apos;s hilarious if they thought about that

  Fuel isn&apos;t the problem: Grace doesn&apos;t have enough food left to give Rocky a ride to Erid and then go home. Even if the Eridians gave him enough astrophage to go home to Earth, he&apos;d starve to death just a few months into a years-long trip. So by saving Rocky, he&apos;s choosing to go on what is (as far as he knows) a suicide mission — the very thing we saw him try so desperately to get out of just a few scenes before.<br><br>Of course, as we see, the Eridians have clearly figured out how to make food he can eat along with building him his little habitat, so then the only question left is will he ever <i>want</i> to go home?

  <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IvHTmSYDri4&amp;t=2365">39:25</a> if you&apos;ll notice here rocky creates a wall of various thickness and materials to test what grace would need (very smart!), which is why the next time you see the wall it&apos;s all transparent.

  I love how into the science you guys were. The book goes really deep into how everything happens and you can see Grace do so many calculations to figure everything out, if you are curious on how anything happens I would recommend 1000% the book and specially the audiobook by Ray Porter. It’s a top 10 book for me. Great reaction and I can say we were all crying during this movie 😂
