The Inspector was so great - with his pause at the door, turns back, 'just one more thing' routine. I see where Columbo borrowed some inspiration here - just.minus the British.

Tony is of interest today as he is a classic psychopath. The 22 minute scene Milland with Anthony Dawson which involves just two characters walking and talking in a small apartment was one the greatest scenes in all of Hitchcock.

John Williams (the detective) became a longtime friend of Hitchcock. he played this role on Broadway and in London OVER 1000 TIMES. Every word, every gesture is perfection.

This was originally a play written by Frederick Knott. Another great movie based on a Knott play that you should see is WAIT UNTIL DARK (1967), about a blind woman being scammed by three criminals. Fantastic performances by Audrey Hepburn and Alan Arkin.

I would like to recommend Strangers on a Train; the actor who played Philip in Tope plays one of the two leads in this movie. I think you will really enjoy it; true Hitchcockian.
