The things that old movies have that many newer movies do not is dialogue and character development

Now you can watch Hitchcock's "Strangers On A Train", which also stars Farley Granger!

There's so much brilliance here. The skyline view thru the window was this massive, amazingly created cyclorama - an exact replica using forced perspective. Models, cutouts, blinking lights, and smoke thru smokestacks - changing in real time to reflect the course of the end of the day. And the clouds were made of spun glass. Which were repositioned and thinned as evening darkened. An incredible amount of detail and planning - even in things that appear simple.

Like no other film I've ever seen, Rope is not only like a stage play set to film, it's a dance. Everything choreographed with several, long sustained shots. Everyone acting, moving, speaking, and parts of the sets moved slightly, all in sync, with the cameras rolling. It looks like a small, simple film, but it was anything but.

The aunt was played by Constance Collier, one of the great old character actresses. In 1923, she became the first person in Europe to be given insulin to treat her diabetes.

Great reaction. Did you 2 notice that the film only has 11 shots or 10 cuts? I know you mentioned earlier Has there been a cut? but the whole film relies on a constantly moving camera that takes on the characteristics of a rope winding around that apartment. And they were blended cuts like moving in on someone's back, cutting, then continuing the shot moving around the person-s back, but there's one cut which is my favorite when Phillip exclaims, 'Thats a lie!" and the shot cuts directly to Rupert's reaction. That's cinema perfection.

The film is one of Hitchcock's most experimental and abandoned many standard film techniques to allow for the long unbroken scenes. Each shot ran continuously for up to 10 minutes (the camera's film capacity) without interruption. It was shot on a single set, aside from the opening establishing shot street scene under the credits. Camera moves were carefully planned and there was very little editing.
The walls of the set were on rollers and could silently be moved out of the way to make way for the camera and then replaced when they were to come back into the shot. Prop men constantly had to move the furniture and other props out of the way of the large Technicolor camera, and then ensure they were replaced in the correct location. A team of sound crew and camera operators kept the camera and microphones in constant motion, as the actors kept to a carefully choreographed set of cues.

This filming technique, which conveys the impression of continuous action, also serves to lengthen the duration of the action in the mind of the viewer.

I'm thrilled that you guys are reacting to older movies. These movies are so much better than most of today's movies (IMO). You two are awesome!!! I can't wait for your next old movie reaction! Keep it up! I love it!!!!

I love the camerawork in this film. Alfred aimed to make it look like one long, continuous shot. However, the physical limitations of film prevented filming the full movie in one take. The reels just weren't long enough. So the reason any cuts happened was to switch film reels. Yet, he would do things like run the camera into the dark coat at the end of one reel and pull away from it after the change of reels, making it still possible to have some sense of continuity.

To have a conversation at the edge of the frame, while focusing on someone cleaning up...also wonderful. We aren't meant to focus on the people talking. Usually, that would be the focus and the foreground, but it was filler for the real action of the scene.
