Popular Camp Gadgets I Would NEVER Buy

This video was meant to sort of poke fun at all these little “gadgets” on the market, that in my personal opinion, seem silly & was meant to be an observation about something that has been super trendy lately… Backpacking “Gadgets”.

The video was meant to be more of a “here’s an alternative” to things that I think you can go without. I’ve done videos like this in the past, and people don’t seem to take things “personal” about the gear that they use. It’s just gear folks. It’s ALL subjective.

I meant no ill intent whatsoever towards any gear company, big or small in this video. I have talked about gear from small & large companies that I would not buy for years here on the channel. That doesn’t mean I’m “attacking” them, it means I’m sharing my opinion on something that is not my cup of tea.

I also own a small cottage company that makes gear out of a small space that supports employee’s families and hopefully one day, my own… and we also make a “gimmicky” cook pot that has “features” that you don’t really need. Which is why I didn’t hard-core market the pot that my company makes and tell people they should buy it instead. I gave a FREE alternative when shedding weight & simplifying your cook pot.

Also… Just to be clear. This isn’t some sort of an “Apology” or a “Disclaimer” about my video. This is a reminder that gear shouldn’t be the thing that is “important” or the thing you should wrap your entire identity around. If you like something, AWESOME!

But if you feel you need to defend it like you have stock in the company… that’s just bizarre behavior. If you’re getting upset because someone doesn’t like the same thing as you, you’re missing the point of all of this in the first place. If you really care that someone’s subjective opinion about a piece of backpacking gear is different than yours, you need to stop watching YouTube Gear Videos right now and get out on the trail. Reconnect with the reason all of us got into this in the first place.

Again Folks... It's ALL Subjective. Use what works for you & makes you comfortable on the trail, because that's ALL that matters!

Love Ya All ❤️

I think backpacking gadgets are a giant conspiracy by shoe manufacturers to have people carry more weight in their pack so that they wear through their shoes faster and need to buy more shoes. They might even be in cahoots with knee replacement surgeons. This could go deeper than we originally thought.

After decades of using my lungs to blow up my sleeping pads, I now love my Flextail. Never did like hassling with those pump sacks.

You’ll have my pad pump when you pry it from my cold dead hands.

I've never used a stake pusher. A rock or my foot have worked just fine. I do like my pad inflator, it's lighter than the pump sac that came with my pad, and it's fast so the noise is like 30 seconds. I use a fuel canister stand when I'm out on granite or sand stone where I can't really just level out the ground. But if I'm in area that's loose dirt, it stays home. My favorite "gimmicky" piece of gear is a hang kit to make my water filtration set up in to a gravity filter. There's nothing I look forward to less than filtering water at camp. I think all these items have a place in different styles of backpacking. What I carry for a weekend overnight is vastly different than what I'd carry on a thru hike. Shorter trips allow for some extra luxuries. Do I need any of that stuff? No, of course not. Does it add some something to the experience on certain trips? Yeah, and as you say. I'm the one who has to carry it.

An inflater pump is also a deflater pump that makes it easier for me to get pad back in storage sack, which is sometimes impossible in cold weather.

My pumpsack doubles as sort of a stuff sack for the sleeping pad itself. I just roll up the pad and then roll the pumpsack around it. Keeps the pad protected in my backpack.

And I use my gas canister itself to create a flat spot sometimes. Just turn it and shove it around until it’s steady.

Ive destroyed bottle caps trying to use them as stake pushers. You know what doesn’t break? Rocks.

For the pot lid, I use one of those silicone covers designed to keep your tea warm. Super light, doesn't mind heat, and when the water is boiling, it can be folded in half if your handles are hot.

As an asthmatic you can pry my pump from my cold dead hands, haha. It is so hard for me to blow up my mattress without a pump. I struggle with just my pillow, forget a mat. Especially after a long day of hiking or canoeing and the portaging. My lungs have had enough.

I like my pump sack.
No batteries required and I’m always a little amazed with the Venturi effect.

A lot of food products like cottage cheese or yogurt come with an aluminum seal under the plastic lid that makes a great pot lid. Most have a tab to grab it by when you peel it off that makes a great handle, and some even have a light waffle or diamond 3D pattern that adds structural strength. I find them handy and long lasting.

The Flextail pump that doubles up as a lantern is a brilliant piece of kit that I use literally every time I go camping. Game changing little thing!
