  "A shared space can become nobody's space." This sums up where we went wrong and why so many people feel alienated and angry. From community parks to online forums, we've lost the ability to respect public spaces. Great point.

  I’m American but was raised differently because neurodivergence runs in my family, so we literally can’t do things like everyone else. I’m also only 3rd generation American, so my family is more closely tied to its counter-cultural Romani origins rather than being socialized to align with American culture, which is characterized by these rules. Not believing these rules just feels like being true to myself instead of taking on characteristics that aren’t mine. It does make it extremely hard to live here, though. It’s nearly impossible to find a single like-minded person, especially in the field my career has been in, tech. I’ve been pushed out of companies so many times, because I won’t do the unethical and illegal things my boss and other leadership want done. I’m in marketing, and I refuse to lie, which it seems is the cost of “success” for people who put money over everything else. I didn’t even sign my last severance agreement, because I won’t be silenced or made to be quiet about what happened there. I may sue, but even if I don’t, there’s no amount of money that can buy my silence or compliance, which is difficult to say as someone who grew up in poverty, never had family money, and now has no family for support at all. But I know one thing: there is always more money to be made. I’ll never need to compromise my values to make it. I’m not sure how other people can stay so attached to rules like these, but I’m thankful that my amalgamation of circumstances landed me where I am literally and figuratively, even if it makes life so hard in certain ways. I’ve found there are pockets where the paradigm is shifted, and I’m moving more into those spaces all the time. There’s no need to change our heart if it’s true. What we really have to do is stay committed to our north star with as much devotion as we can in every moment. It’s a struggle to be counter-cultural, but it’s worth it to have a great life. ❤
