In 2008, in Manitoba, Canada, a man was stabbed, beheaded, and cannibalized while riding a Greyhound bus. His killer was found not criminally responsible and sent to mental health facility. He was schizophrenic and off his meds at the time of the killing. He was released in 2015 and allowed to change his name. It is terrifying that he can be allowed to walk freely.

Thank you for covering - we were shocked this morning when the local news reported the plea. Disgusting. He left Duffy's after a physical fight with his dad. Jupiter didn't want this case to be publicized. I'm so sorry for the victim's families.

The problem is I don’t think many people really understand what insane is. It is literally lights and movement are on but no one is home in terms of basic right/wrong/reasoning. This means this person will have to go beyond reasonable doubt to prove that he will never, ever have another such episode. This is very difficult to prove.

There’s someone local who did get out. He really did have a single psychotic break and killed girlfriend in his early twenties. He was not freed until well into his middle age and that was even though he never showed another psychotic problem.

Drug induced mood disorder used to be in the DSM. The 5th edition no longer includes it. Two forensic evaluators opined that his diagnosis is Bipolar I, most recent episode manic with psychotic features. Two evaluators came to that conclusion based on clinical interviews, review of records and police reports/body cam footage, his social media and texts, and batteries of psychological testing.
Listening to the victim's sister read his texts was telling. They demonstrate his self-reported drug and alcohol use and blackouts. There are some texts referring to wanting to engage in hypers*xu*l behavior while under the influence. His texts (prior to the crime) chronicle his "blackouts", which everyone attributes to drugs and/or alcohol. In substance abuse treatment we see cases of psychogenic blackouts, so this is a real condition but it has certain criteria His fraternity brothers spoke about his increasing discussions of religious thinking. He mentioned something to his sister about being "part dog", and during this horrific crime he was found "growling". This is some of the information available. And from my professional experience, this is not unusual in patients remanded to secure psychiatric Forensic facilities. He is being remanded to one such facility via involuntary commitment. I can assure you that patients remanded to these facilities statistically spend ("serve") more time than if sentenced to prison. (However, in FL he would've received a minimum of life, correct?) Regardless, the environment of these facilities is not any easier than prison.

The family could’ve put on this case had they taken over this case. The system failed this family.
