10 Home Mistakes Homeowners Regret Most

My mom (not an architect, just someone who paid attention) designed my parents' retirement home in the Rocky Mountains. There are closets EVERYWHERE, the bathrooms are convenient but private, and the windows are placed (and eaves are calculated) to maximize solar gain in winter and minimize it in summer. The only hallways are wide enough to serve as additional rooms (office space upstairs, room to store and doff/don outdoor gear downstairs). It's so nice to hear her choices validated!

Thank you for this video! I never hear anyone talk about fireplaces, so this was great. We have an old home with a fireplace in the bedroom. While this sounds romantic, it's awful. The fireplace needs a ton of work to make it operational and safe, and the odd bedroom layout makes the fireplace wall the only wall to put the headboard against. We've blocked up the fireplace as best we can and have our headboard against it. We plan to tear out the fireplace, it can't happen soon enough! That said, there is another fireplace in the front room which we'll keep for the exact reasons you state in the video.

I prefer not to have a fireplace so that there's room for my piano.

Our condo has a wall of glass in every room except the bathrooms and the kitchen, so we don't use our overhead lights during the day. We love it because our condo is on a corner of the building, so we can open the doors and get great cross ventilation. We don't need A/C for more than 4-6 weeks per year. 😊

We love our tile floors, too. I absolutely hate carpet and wood floors. I had them before, and they're not easy care when you have a pet. Also, carpets are bad for allergies.

We fortunately don't have a hallway. It's amazing how spacious our home feels without one.

We have a large closet for storing seasonal decorations and such, and each bedroom has a large closet. We don't need dressers.

One thing that I want to end with is the view. Besides the cross ventilation, the views sold us on our condo.

I hate overhead lighting, except in the kitchen. Hubby is worried eliminating wall to wall in main room is going to be loud but I despise it in main living area. Will explore other sound absorption options. This is another great food for thought video, thanks!

Another great Video with useful recommendations. Thank you! It always sparks joy to see new one.
Fireplaces. Thy are "emotionally valuable" I agree.
Here in Europe though, it is increasingly difficult to get permission for wood burning stoves/fireplaces.
One alternative (not in regard of permission) in regard of efficiency is a Soapstone or a wood-burning stove, with a glass door, which makes the flames visible and does produce very cozy heat. I have friends, who can heat a whole (fairly "open plan") apartment during spring or autumn, that way. They only need the central heating in winter.

Thank you, Mac; I appreciate how experienced and knowledgeable you are, but also your easy to follow delivery, and the calm vibe of your videos (no aggressive use of stock images/graphics that whirl by quickly on top of narration). If creators are conveying important points, using fast changing graphics/images can be chaotic to follow. Also love reading your comment section - you have so many nice and informative followers.

Our last home was a lovely updated ranch in an active adult community with exactly the wasted/dead hallway space you mentioned, a chaotic open floor plan, and only one very narrow, but deep, nightmare of a storage closet (major tract home builder in the Atlanta metro area). Totally agree about the almost primal connection many people have to fireplaces (and outdoor fire pits). We used our glassed in gas fireplace frequently on damp Georgia fall nights. Apologies for my long comment! Thanks again!
