An orchid in bathrooms, a healthy live plant in the living room really brings a room to life and signals that the house is fresh and well cared for.

I might stain entry doors but the old fittings look far nicer to me, than shiny new.

About the painted hinges… boil them in a pot with vinegar and water. The paint falls off easily.

My Victorian cottage has most of its original, beautiful hardware, but it had been coated with over 120 years of paint. As I painted and decorated each room, I stripped and refinished all the hardware. What a difference! I also stripped the extant original solid wood paneled doors, but several had been cut up into paint shelving (!) for the garage. Someday, I’ll replace the modern, flat-face replacement doors with vintage ones, if possible, or custom new ones. Sadly, the built-in, pass-through china cabinet had also been destroyed by the previous owners, who were quite proud of this when they informed us, the idiots (they were also the door destroyers). If you must remove vintage features, store them in the house somewhere!

Houses need to be prepared to be shown to potential buyers. That means removing 1/2 to 1/3 of all possessions and everything personal. A very thorough cleaning, too, including windows.

Thank you for another fantastic and insightful video! You're absolutely right, it's not just about how a house makes me think, but how it makes me feel. The vibe of the neighborhood plays a huge role too. I live in the Greater Vancouver area in BC, and I remember driving out to the northern part of Maple Ridge, which is a bit outside of Vancouver. From the moment I arrived, I just felt this incredible connection to the place. The neighborhood, the vibe, there was something about it that made me feel so peaceful and happy. The farms, the horses, the trees! It was the kind of place where I thought, “If I could ever live here, I'd feel happy every single day.” On a different note, I really can't stand properties with a mini golf course in the backyard. I don't play golf, and honestly, to me, it just feels like wasted space! I have a rescue dog, and my dream is to have a private, fully fenced backyard where my dog can run and play. But unfortunately, houses in the Greater Vancouver area are ridiculously expensive. The starting price for a house is at least a million Canadian dollars, even old, rundown, ugly houses cost that much because of the land value. Vancouver and Toronto are two of the priciest cities in Canada. So, at this point, all I can afford is a condo, not even a townhouse!
Also, 38% of households in Canada (and 45.5% in the US) have at least one dog! It’s frustrating when homeowners replace grass with cement or patios in the backyard, leaving little or no space for dogs to play. The main reason I want a house instead of a condo or townhouse is to have that grassy backyard for my dog, so it's really disappointing when people eliminate that in the name of "easy maintenance." 😸

I have seen people reject a house - a great house, bevause they hated the colour scheme.

House sat, dropped in price - a total bargain for a coat of paint and someone with a brain...

Most people have the common sense of a guinea pig and the inability to even imagine the place in a paint colour they like.

It is nice to think that those with imagination and willing to put in work, get a cheap family home.

And I guess many end up flipping houses - because they have those abilities that others don't have.

The dog was funny guarding his piles of pillows, but too much stuff in that house. My previous homeowners DIY painted everything including hinges, I didn't notice when looking, but after I moved in it's been a project to scrape paint off all the hinges.
