  We have a small dam on the Fox River that was built for hydro power in the 1920&apos;s where they anticipated the sediment buildup, and built two very large butterfly valves to flush the sediment downstream. Great idea, right? The first time that they opened the valves, a log jammed in one of them and the reservoir emptied. It took some time to remove the log, with the hydro plant out of production; the valves were never opened again after that.

  I am a scientist working in a dam/tailwater system built in the 1960s, and I did my graduate study on dam removal projects. We are now dealing with both of the sediment associated problems with the dam that I work in association with. The upper reaches of the lake are filling in with sediment, preventing boat access for a major recreation lake. Downstream of the dam, we are seeing the river channelize; abandoning side channels, not maintaining floodplain marshes, and simplifying underwater structures, which limits aquatic habitat. I have been saying all of these things for a while, but I will be sending your video around as a great visualization of the issues. Thank you, and well done.<br><br>Edit: Spelling and grammar.

I just do video work part-time, but &nbsp;always take footage of dams and waterways with you in mind specifically! <br>(Especially when they’re releasing water at the Oroville spillway ;)
