  The original version of the song is (IIRC) about Reznor&apos;s experiences as a younger man with drug addiction, and the pain it caused. Surely a deeply emotional and personal reflection of a period of pain and trauma. When Cash covered it, it transformed into a retrospective on a long, long life filled with loss and pain, and the knowledge of how it was coming to its end, and I think inevitably became a much deeper and rawer emotional experience, added to by the weight of the years in Cash&apos;s voice. <br><br>Seeing him close the cover on his piano wrecks me every time.

  House of Cash was museum of his &nbsp;with his memorabilia from over the years at the end of the song his daughter said &quot;it sounds like you are saying goodbye&quot; and as the he closed the piano he said &quot;I am&quot;<br> &quot;You can have it all....my empire of dirt&quot; the museum and all of his possessions

  The part with his wife standing on the stairs wasn&apos;t planned. She came down to check on him and the director felt that it fit and kept it in.

  This song was written by a young man suffering from depression. Johnny did it as an old man depressed that he knew it was all coming to the end for both him and June.

  This was Johnny&apos;s final farewell to us all as he closes the piano for the very last time. An absolute legend of country music, we&apos;ll never see or hear his like again. God bless him. RIP man &nbsp;💔💔
