  Watching the change of your face from happy to sad in seconds was the reality of it. James and his dad were both in the Military and when James was being deployed his dad would say " I'm not your father, you're not my son. We're just two grown men saying goodbye" James turned it around for the song. His dad had chronic kidney disease and needed a transplant. James' sister wrote a poem to him which James turned into this song. As a result of this song and video a distant relative learned of his need and donated a kidney saving his life. The video was shot in a one take. James, the camera crew, the sound crew were all crying. When they finished his dad asked "Why are you all crying? I'm still here."

  i still cant watch this without crying, this was his dad , they both served in the military but his father had a kidney problem which meant he would die if he didnt find a donor. he did it live to his father and because of the release a distant relative came forward to donate. and yes he is still alive. because of the donation. such a lovely man james is. i didnt much want to cry today but  as you were watching a watched through gritted teeth. thank abbie

  Yes, James and his father were both formerly officers in the British military and I heard that James donated all the proceeds from this beautiful video to the UK charity 'Help For Heroes' who do fantastic work for ex-servicemen and women, and as a former military man myself, I salute him for that. It was a very beautiful thing to do. 🙋‍♂

  I absolutely loved your reaction, and the emotions you allowed yourself to freely express.<br><br>There is so much that everyone can identify with when it comes to our parents, but the relationship between a son and his father is different...and can be more nuanced and complicated.<br><br>But you nailed it quite well.<br><br>When I was forced to say goodbye to my father back in 1985, I felt the need - the obligation - to let him know that I was willing to step up and take care of things. He had been my best friend and confidant, but the man&apos;s role in the family superceded that.<br><br>Think about the contradiction in this song that everyone misses.<br><br>&quot;I&apos;m not your son, you&apos;re not my father, we&apos;re just two grown men saying goodbye&quot;<br><br>followed by<br><br>&quot;So DADDY, won&apos;t you just close your eyes&quot;<br><br>The conflict of our roles. That&apos;s the complication. That&apos;s often the tension between father and son.   Normally here for Ren, but I cant pass by this track, its amazing and very sad. &apos;I&apos;m not your son, your not my father, were just two grown men saying goodbye&apos; is how they said goodbye when they were leaving for a tour of service, both James and his father served in the British forces.<br>His father had donated a kidney earlier in life and now the one left was failing, this was a genuine goodbye song. One take with James insisting nothing was tuned up or corrected. When he finished everyone in the room was crying except his dad, who said &apos;I&apos;m not dead yet!&apos;<br>The song has such reach they discovered a distant relative who could donate a kidney and his dad was saved. It&apos;s a beautiful story.<br><br>As a little extra, I&apos;d heard his dad did not approve of James leaving the army and becoming a singer. this was the first time he had heard him sing (apparently). Edit: This bit is debunked - I just heard him in an interview saying he played to his dad on headphones after he wrote it! <br>Blunt is not afraid to sing about difficult subjects. &apos;The girl that never was&apos; is about a child him and his wife lost to miscarriage, and &apos;I&apos;ll carry you home&apos; is about him having to carry the tags and letter of a dead colleague back to their partner after he held a soldier in his platoon in his arms as they died. Both beautiful and meaningful, but I need tissues to watch them.

  This is one of those songs with a emotional punch.<br><br>James Blunt wrote this song due to a poém his sister wrote for thier dad.<br>Who was diagnosed with Kidney failiure.<br>To say goodbye.<br><br>And thanks to this song going viral. Found a family member who was a donor match.<br>And saving thier dad&apos;s life.<br><br>❤❤❤<br>Ray.

  I&apos;m a huge James Blunt fan, we played this at my dad&apos;s funeral earlier this year.<br>I had listened to it dozens of times and been emotional every time, but the very first note in church absolutely broke me.<br>I knew it was about to be played but I couldn&apos;t hold in the tears.<br><br>I occasionally look for other people first reactions to it, and I struggle again, but the strength for James to sing it with his dad sat there is just extraordinary.<br>❤️💔

  I&apos;m a 45 year old man and a serious metalhead. &nbsp;I normally can&apos;t stand James Blunts music because it&apos;s too saccharine. &nbsp;This one I watch every reaction I see. &nbsp;I don&apos;t know where my father is, but he&apos;s nearing the end of his life wherever it is. &nbsp;I hated him for thirty years, but I realized a while back that I&apos;ve made some of the same mistakes (I didn&apos;t leave though) and I mostly understand him now. &nbsp;He was far from a good man, but I&apos;ve mostly let my anger go and it only crops up when I&apos;m beating myself up for the state of my life now. &nbsp;I&apos;m not the forgiving type, so that&apos;s not on the table, but I am the understanding type. &nbsp;I cry like a little girl when I hear this one, but sometimes that helps me get past some of my self loathing and soldier on.

  An incredibly emotional song. As someone who&apos;s been through that moment it&apos;s one of the few songs that reduces me to tears.<br>James Blunt also has several other songs which pull at the emotions. The Girl that never was, Carry you Home, No Bravery, Goodbye my Lover.<br>A very under appreciated artist.
