The Pirate City That Sank Into the Sea in Minutes | Port Royal In 1692, Port Royal, Jamaica was one of the richest and most notorious cities in the Caribbean. Then, within minutes, streets collapsed, buildings sank into the ground, and much of the pirate city disappeared beneath the sea. On June 7, 1692, a devastating earthquake struck Port Royal. But this was not an ordinary urban collapse. The water-saturated ground beneath parts of the city lost its strength through a process now known as liquefaction, causing streets, houses and entire sections of the waterfront to sink toward Kingston Harbour. And centuries later, archaeologists recovered something extraordinary from the submerged ruins: a small brass pocket watch whose mechanism appeared to have stopped at approximately 11:43 — almost exactly when historical accounts place the catastrophe. This cinematic history documentary explores the rise and destruction of Port Royal, Jamaica, from its reputation as one of the Caribbean's most infamous pirate ports to its transformation into a wealthy colonial trading center. We follow the world of privateers and Henry Morgan, Port Royal's booming harbor economy, its forts and merchants, the earthquake of 1692, the liquefaction that destroyed the ground beneath the city, the destructive waves that followed, and the underwater archaeology that later revealed streets and buildings preserved beneath the harbor. Port Royal was often remembered as the “wickedest city on Earth.” But the real reason it sank had nothing to do with morality. The same location that made Port Royal wealthy and strategically valuable also left parts of the city sitting on dangerously unstable, water-saturated sediment. Today, the surviving terrestrial and underwater remains preserve an extraordinary record of seventeenth-century colonial life. In 2025, the Archaeological Ensemble of 17th Century Port Royal was inscribed on UNESCO's World Heritage List. (UNESCO World Heritage Centre) This is the story of pirates, wealth, disaster, geology and a city that did not simply collapse. It sank.
