  Byzantine Emperor Justinian I commissioned two Nestorian monks to smuggle silkworm eggs from China to the Byzantine Empire in 552 A.D.. The monks successfully hid the eggs inside hollow bamboo walking sticks and brought them back to Constantinople, which established the Byzantine silk industry and ended China&apos;s monopoly on silk production in the West. <br>1. Emperor Justinian wanted to create a Byzantine silk industry to end dependence on costly imports from China and Persia, especially during times of war. <br> 2. Two Nestorian monks, who had been on missionary trips to China, were tasked with the mission. <br>3. They concealed the silkworm eggs and mulberry seeds in hollowed-out bamboo canes and smuggled them out of China. <br>4.
