A word on cover crops that I learned from a Master Gardener:

Apparently, a cover crop fixes nitrogen up until the point before it flowers. Once it starts flowering, setting fruit or going to seed, it has already taken all the nitrogen back from the soil that it took from the air. The point of cover crops is to let them, she said, grow a few inches and then to turn them into the soil or cut them off at the base (chop and drop), and let the root system disintegrate in place to distribute the nitrogen.

Also, plant matter sequesters nitrogen and keeps it locked up and steals extra from the soil itself while the breakdown of the plant matter happens. It isnt until it is fully degraded thst it adds it back.

The more you know! I thought it was interesting and that more people would want to know.

Dear Cassandra, PLEASE make a beautiful fall garden planting guide pdf like your spring guide. It seriously opened the path to start filling the empty pockets of my greenstalk. Thank you for helping me get the right seeds for fall!!!!!❤

Yeah you tell'em. Summer in the garden is NOT for the feint hearted. Getting through our tomato patch is more like a combat zone deep in 'nam. That cute little cucumber that was an inch yesterday is 8 inches today. WE have pickled more cucumbers this month than our local grocery store will sell all year. Someone give me more cucumber recipes please! Trying to keep those squash vines in your own yard? Might as well tell the neighbors they can keep what they find and they are welcome. Get up before the sun rises to get water on the garden before the temps get into the broiling zone. That one chicken that makes a run for the strawberries as soon as the coop door is open, you have to be quick to head her off and distract with a pile of mealworms. We have discovered that taking a bag of cucumbers over to the house down the road with the apple trees fully laden with fruit is a great way to come back with several 5 gallon buckets of apples. The guy with that mess of blackberries growing in his yard, you want a couple pounds of tomatoes and let us pick blackberries for the afternoon?

Thank you for the information but Florida does not follow the rules. We are starting our second round of tomatoes and are not able to start cool weather crops until October. 😂 Love your videos!

Omg! Thank you! I am grateful to have been led to your page. I was researching and I am a beginner. It’s late September and my yard/patio is small. Fall is my favorite season and I live in the South now.

Best quality 45 minutes I've spent on YouTube in ages. Your energy and positive attitude is infectious. The merciless summer heat made me abandon my garden. Now motivated to rebuild raised beds and try your fall crop suggestion. 👍

For a good decade, i lived a wannabe urban homesteader life. It was great. - a great deal of work. Then I got rid of everything and downsized to a tiny apartment in a big city. Thats great also. ...but it has a balcony, and i miss my fresh everything.
Now here I am looking at greenstalks and takin notes.
