  As a Certified Financial Planner I&apos;ve found that poverty is directly linked to lack of ability to delay gratification. &nbsp;Poor people tend to do what makes them feel good right now with less regard to the future. That generally translates into what they eat as well.

  When we were younger just about everyone was skinny. &nbsp;We moved more and they didn&apos;t add corn syrup to everything back then.

  When I was a child in the 50s and 60s people didn&apos;t seem to snack between meals very much. You had set meal times and went hungry between them. We all have regular snacks nowadays and this, apparently, triggers ones insulin response which then has an effect on fat and fat loss.

  We need to talk about the lost art of cooking. Cooking used to be a skill passed from generation to generation so each generation knew how to feed themselves from basic ingredients, especially in bad times. But today’s offerings in America’s supermarkets show that most Americans can’t cook - they can only buy premade food. I believe the food industry wants it that way. The food industry and the death of cooking skills are big parts of the obesity-poverty issue.

  That eating healthy is expensive is a complete myth. Beans are cheap. Rice is cheap. Chicken is cheap. Most fruits and vegetables are cheap. &nbsp;I can and have put together meal plans that cost less per day than the cost of a fast food burger.

  Since this was posted, a lot of states have now banned soda and sugary drinks and candy from SNAP.

  I grew up in a fat poor family, and it was like a group psychiatric illness. Sure, there were economic factors but we kept ourselves in a prison we didn’t have to be in.

  I used to be quite poor, and it was very stressful. &nbsp;Eating was a great source of comfort, especially those carbs and sweets. &nbsp;When I climbed into a higher income bracket, it all changed. &nbsp;There was less stress, less eating, I got a gym membership, and the extra pounds went away. &nbsp;So yes, your point about stress really hit home for me. &nbsp; It is a complicated issue, though.
